Zack Steffen Negativity

Boro posted a video on their Facebook yesterday saying 'Bet England are glad they don't have to face this guy' and it was a compilation of some absolutely excellent saves.

What bemused me was the negativity, some of the comments were brutal, how he's not good enough and is a poor keeper.

What on earth are people watching?!

In my opinion the guy is our best keeper since Randolph.
He had a shaky start but since he shook off his injury and especially under Carrick he's been excellent.
I can't actually remember a goal that was purely his fault, his distribution has been great, he brings calmness to the back line being so laid back and some of the saves he's made have been absolutely magnificent.

What impressed me the most was his selfless attitude to keep his World Cup disappointment to himself four hours before a game and perform well both that day and then again at the weekend.

In my eyes he deserved his place in the USA squad and I really hope we make his deal permanently. Great guy to. Our fans really will moan at anything

Never get bemused by how strange people think. For instance just think how many people are voting for the “nice” Mr Hancock.

I guess its first impressions with some people. The second QPR goal was a very bad mistake and in early games he seemed to punch when it would have been safer to catch. Punching often kept the ball in play near your own goal. He now punches less.

Overall a better than average Championship keeper just behind Randolph for me, but ahead of all our recent keepers.

Keepers are in a terrible position if they’ve not got a rock solid defence in front of them… Steffens had worldies for us then let a goal in and been deemed worse than lummley… this is the bipolar effect in fans that that other post alludes to…

he is certainly looking like a steal for us and I hope we keep him as long as Schwarzer on current form…

I think he's massively improved after a slightly shaky start. I mean it was only a few months ago people actively suggest Roberts starts.

I think he's proved he's decent. I mean we've been as bad with keepers as we have with forwards. That's usually because we've tried to get them on the cheap. Randolph showed just how much a top keeper is needed. Regularly producing 'match winning' moments (especially in a low scoring pulis side).

I think many just thought a city No2 and international keeper would just come in and be one of the best in the league. Yet he'd hardly played in over a year. Also very much a different world in the champo from the league to Boro as a whole. So was always going to take time.

I like him. I'm not sure I'd break the bank to sign him on a perm (some rumours). Hopefully continues to get better under Carrick.

Steffan is a really good keeper. I think he quite a bit behind Randolph mind as s7 says Randolph won a lot points for boro. Yet to see that from Steffan but he’s the best we’ve had since Randolph and we have a decent back up in Roberts

The shaky start probably cultivated these negative opinions. It seems most fans make a decision on a player after a handful of games then stick to it, no matter what happens after.

Maybe it’s to save face or it’s a desire to be proven as some sort of footballing intellectual but ultimately, if you can’t be subjective, it just makes you look stupid.

Steffan has been brilliant lately. He’s got stronger and stronger as the season has gone on and grown in confidence. Would love him to stay but think he’ll be hoping to play at higher level.

Maybe if we have a strong second half of season Carrick can persuade him we are serious contenders next season.

Agree I find there are lot of strongly opionated individuals on here who find it difficult to change their minds even in the face of strong evidence that they should do so.

Strange how his form has had an upturn playing under Carrick and behind a settled back four .....🤔🤔

Excellent keeper, a "bit" flappy at crosses sometimes, but nothing to be unduly concerned about. Probably down to over confidence 🤷🏻‍♂️

Probably struggling to be able to afford to buy him, but another cheeky loan bid for next season.....I'd be more than happy with that👍
