Zack Steffen on a permanent (Twitter rumour)

Allows us to bring in ANOTHER loan player in January.. possibly the most cost effective move in January.

I genuinely thought it would be a position we wouldn't be trying to fill and that Roberts, Hemming and Brynn would be fighting it out once Steffen left.

One thing that might help us with his wages is that we have a couple of really good youth keepers and we can allow Daniels to go in the summer and still have Steffan, Roberts and either of the youngsters. Daniels current wages could offset 5-8k of Steffans

I think I read a report somewhere that he is on £72k/ week at Citeh. We seem to have got past the stage where we offer players daft contracts so if he fits into the pay structure I am not against it. That said, Hemming and Brynn seem to be getting good experience so would not be surprised if they come into the clubs thinking also. Golden thread and all that.

Not overly convinced by him this season and certainly wouldn't want to pay over the top for him, or a huge chunk of budget.

He’s on 65k per week but would join us for 44k if we said you’ll get 62k when we go up or 47k if we go up and come back down, and 55k if we win a cup and agree to write off your 700k loyalty for signing but if you do do that then we’ll go to 61k, matching the 80, 41, 23 or 57k he’s on at City, unless he isn’t, which he probably is. Plus pension contributions. I pretty much know this for a fact, going off rumours online.
Thanks for clearing that up Viv. Deffo a go for me👍

I realise this is tongue in cheek but I was just reading an interview with Stuart Webber at Norwich who said they found it really hard last year to recruit Premiership standard players due to the 60% wage reduction clause should they get relegated.

Would you take a job where you were guaranteed to lose 60% of your pay after a year?

If I was an international goalkeeper at 27yo I’d rather be first choice getting game time with the opportunity to progress rather than sit in the reserves until I’m 30 and struggle to earn the big bucks at a decent level.

45k for 3 years = £6.75m to 30yo
maybe £1m a year after.. with little game time

or 30k for 6 years = £9m still only 33yo he could stretch another 6 years at that level imo

an eye on the prem with boro an promotion bonuses.. defo the best move to play long term imo

a goalkeepers career is much longer and would be affected by inaction and not competing at a decent level.

If you’re a good keeper you want game time, no reason why he shouldn’t be no 1

The thing is, the 3 american goalies going to the world cup are probably on less per week in combined wages than Steffen so I would probably suggest he is overpaid. I wouldn’t ho over £10k/ week tbh.

I don’t think anyone can argue he’s a top notch keeper. Initially I was against Zack joining only due to the fact the deal was a loan, and having a keeper on a loan deal doesn’t fill me with confidence as it’s much too temporary and could undermine the teams’ confidence.

Nonetheless I think he’s settled in and will offer us much more once he’s been here a full season.

I think it’s too bad what’s happened to him on the national team front as I do believe he’s the best the US national team has in terms of skills and probably experience.

Probably this move is to cement his position with MFC and show the US national team that he can hold down a permanent spot with a European team.

44k a week is way too much for us to pay as a championship side that would burst our ceiling. As good as he is , I think the wages could be better spent elsewhere

Depends how much I was getting in the first year I suppose and what other offers were on the table.

If 40% of that first year pay was still as good as anything anyone else was offering and more than I was currently on, then yes pretty sure I would!

I just cant see any way that this rumour is true. The wage issue looks insurmountable. I would love for it to be true but very much doubt the validity of this rumour.

You might be surprised by his City wage, of course they pay absolute top dollar for their big transfers but a backup/development keeper might be much more reasonable.

Different profile coming from the youth team and that but remember reading that Foden was only on 50k until he signed his big new deal quite recently. Cancelo’s not on much.

This site has Steffen on about 40k. For a Randolph type, solid as with resale value and clearly one of the best keepers in the league (not sure Steffen is yet, but if that was the calculation) then I could see us going 20k. Isn’t that about what we were paying Randolph?
