Zack Steffen

Improving every game, would love to see him back next season, his confidence and decision making hS improved throughout the season, big player for us now.

I can’t think of a single time he has cost us from a cross.

Without doubt he is the best distributor of the ball as a keeper in this league.

I agree with others, lately he seems to have gone up a level and certainly where I sit at the riverside some people seemed to have calmed to his technique.
He punches them ineffectively or misses completely, He's improved but wouldn’t be bothered if he isn’t signed,

I wouldn’t be going out my way to sign him. He’s not a keeper who wins you points. Solid enough for the division. He’s not value for money

He does win us points though, he’s constantly looking up the pitch looking for an opening a lot of our counter attacks where we’ve scored come from his decision making (in an attacking sense), releasing the ball at the right time to the right player. It’s not his fault some of our players switch off making him look daft as they aren’t ready for the ball when they should be.

Depends on how you view it doesn’t it. If we didn’t have Zak Steffan in goal so I think we would be as successful and create the same amount of chances, in my opinion we would

I think the club will be making every effort to sign him whatever division we're in. He is perfect for the way we play and looks really settled now.

Obviously much harder if we don't go up given his (reported) wage, but I don't think it's impossible. He's made it clear he doesn't want to go back to City and because of his mixed start and our goals conceded column (not his fault, but probably doesn't look that way from the outside) I don't think other clubs will necessarily be queuing up to sign him.

Steffen or a keeper who can play it out like that? If we had an alternative who can do that than yes agree. But that's the point, that style of keeper is key to how we play.

If you're talking about Roberts then you're way off.

Previously asked about criticism of Steffen by Craig Johns, Carrick said "he`s had no complaints from me". He added that [Steffen] "is the first line of attack". At time we play a very high line, with a defender on the half way line and the rest in the oppositions half. Steffen does what Carrick wants and [as someone posted earlier] hes got better and better in that role.

The inevitable risk of playing a high line is conceding goals - but we have a team who`s priority is "front-foot": our players attack together and defend together. We`ve seen the results this season - the most goals scored in any season for decades. Goals from all over the park and more points-per-game under Carrick than for many many years. Plus - we have Chuba, who is a revelation.

Its a team effort and hes part of that winning team. Steffen has been between the sticks from 21st place to 4th. There has to be something he`s doing right?

Carricks off-hand dismissal of critcism directed at Steffen during interviews, says it all roofie. I tend not to get involved in these steffan debates as it is largely pointless.

Constantly came on here and on Facebook to defend Steffen.

It was clear from the first game what an improvement he was on the dross we've had before.

Let's not forget this man is employed and has played for a Pep Guardiola side, he has been trusted with some big games to.

Some of his performances have been excellent and have you noticed as the team are getting better at playing out from the back his mistakes are becoming a distant memory. He's so cool, calm whe collected just like our gaffer and some of his saves are excellent.

I watch Bernie live stream and he's insistent Steffen would cost us on the big stage, I totally disagree he's more likely to save us.

On his future I think he's happy here, if we go up here my number one choice, as would all the loan players, if we stay down I can see us trying but his wages maybe a bit much.

I'm gonna enjoy this special group of players for the next 2-3 games and see what happens!

Super Zack Steffen in Goal!

He's in the middle of the table for goals prevented this season: https://www.fotmob.com/leagues/48/stats/season/17834/players/_goals_prevented

He has improved a lot but I'm not 100% convinced he is value for money. His distribution is excellent, he commands his area well and he does make some good saves (but does he let a few easy ones in?). For the money he costs we should expect him to be at the top of the keeper rankings. He could continue to improve however.

An issue I have is he sometimes is reluctant to come off his line - I think it cost us with Fry v Sunderland, Morris v Luton and nearly v Coventry the other day.

He was given the chance instead of roberts if roberts got the same game time he would be world class by now dont forget we concede goals every game with Steffen. Hope we dont for the final.

We concede every game because of the way we play. Risk and reward and all that. We have a left back who bombs on and players in front of his that drift into the number 10 position rather than covering. As a result we've conceded more than you might expect, but we've scored a hell of a lot more. We could play a very solid midfield 4 and stop our attacking instincts and concede a lot less. And you'd then conclude presumably that Steffen was a better keeper?

This maybe the worst take I've ever seen on this board. Roberts is a poor shot stopper, he is good at claiming crosses, but cant play out from the back. Every goal kick we would lump it forward and surrender possession to the opposition.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Your only contribution to this board is to ever speak about Liam Roberts. Not the biggest fan of Steffen are you Liam?

Steffen is getting better as the season goes on., his playing out for the back has been excellent.

He is a well built for a keeper, and i would say his weakness is for the low down saves in the corners that need that little extra spring or agility. Any block type saves where he need to be big and spread himself he deals with comfortably. That being said if he didn't have that weakness he would be in the prem not with us in the championship.

It would be unfair and untrue to say that he hasn't massively improved, especially in the last couple of months.
His distribution can be very good, but he still creates danger with some daft passes that are way too risky. This has definitely become much less of a concern.

I've been impressed recently at him commanding his box and he has definitely become bolder and more assured.

He does make some good saves, but still lets some very disappointing shots go in without even moving. He is very slow getting down and does not appear agile at all.

Overall, he is much much better than in 2022 and is steadily improving.
He does enable Carrick to play the way he wants, so it is a question of could we find a similar type of keeper for better value if the reported salary is true?
