Zahawi sacked

“I believe that in no other country on earth would my story be possible” - not possible here now thanks to your government.

“In a week when a member of parliament was physically assaulted” - he can’t even stop lying in his letter after being sacked. At no point in that incident on the tube was Matt Hancock physically assaulted.

It is being worded as 'a serious breach of the ministerial code'
I suspect this is so Sunak can deflect questions as to why he re-appointed Sue Ellen after she breached the code. He will try to argue hers was less serious. After all hers was only a breach of security in the Home Office ...

It’s the “Reverse” Pontius Pilate defence. Pilate allegedly thought Jesus was innocent. Sunak knew Zahawi was guilty.
Then went through the hand washing. “This man’s blood is not on my hands” routine
His old mate from Goldman Sachs, who he appointed, didn’t have to be told directly what he was supposed to do. He knew he had to pull his friend out of the quagmire he had got himself into. What a complete farce. It’s doubtful that Sunak will be leader at the next election.

So the statement was released while Gove was on air putting up some kind of defence?
Sunak certainly knows how to make enemies. Gove is a much better political operator.
He’s more than capable of doing serious damage to Sunak.

He'll be loyal to Sunak in the hope of keeping in with Hunt, the likely next PM. The alternative is the return of Johnson that the ERG mentalists are baying for and he knows he'd have no chance of retaining his job then.

All of this is a disgrace and shows how weak Sunak is but despite all of that I can't see Sunak going anywhere. Another change of PM would force a GE I would think. The Tories have some brass neck but I think even they would struggle not to see how crazy it would be!

This could be extremely damaging to the extent it ends sunaks premiership. The observer reports this morning that Sunak was advised of the tax irregularities when he appointed Zahawi. Given that Sunak is on the record as saying he was not aware, he may have lied to parliament. If he has, it will result in an investigation, or, the tories have to vote that enquiry down.

We haven't finished investigating if Boris lied to parliament two years ago have we?

I'd rather he was charged for tax evasion, extreme negligence in public office (he was Front bench and chancellor FFS), or at least massively fined (I bet what he was fined was tiny), as well as being billed for the interest.

Anyone else making genuine errors, for much smaller amounts has HMRC on their back relentlessly, with interest, fines and then also other tax affairs get looked into with a fine-toothed comb.

If my accountant did this they would be strung up, and written off, and you would have to assume that the former chancellor would have to be assumed to have more responsibility and accountability, than a small accountancy firm.

He was fined. He had to pay a 30% levy ontop of interest. Presumably he didn't reach the threshold for him to face criminal charges.
