Vinicius Junior "mono" chants

There are reports that during Madrids game in Valencia Vinicius Junior was the target of racial slurs from large sections of the Valencia support.

He's accused Spain of being a racist country and said the matter of racism is in La Liga is fairly common. He further said that the Spanish Federation and rival teams encourage such behaviour.

Carlo Ancelotti was quoted after the game as saying
"What we saw today is unacceptable. An entire stadium chanting racial slurs. I told the referee that he should have stopped the match".

It really doesn't look good for La Liga.

There are isolated incidents that rear their ugly heads in English football every now and then such as the incident with Son who was abused by a Chelsea fan but they are isolated incidents carried out by individuals. Whats happening in La Liga seems to be ingrained in the footballing culture there and on a different level all together.

Have a look on YouTube It’s been happening throughout the season at various away grounds. Mono chants and gestures.

Disgusting. The racists commenting try and excuse it by saying he ‘winds up the crowds’ as opposed to the other black players. As if that then gives them carte blanche to single him out for racist abuse.

It really makes the Spanish crowds look like backward nasty people. Remember England in Spain in 2005 and how vile and shocking that match was. It doesn’t go away quickly unfortunately.

They shouldn't have to, but I can't understand why Real didn't walk off...

I wondered that too
Courtois was interviewed about it and said they were ready to walk off but Junior wanted to stay on.

Personal view - it should be the manager’s call If the ref won’t do the job.
Ancelotti asked him if he wanted to be subbed ☺️

Spanish crowds are terrible for this sort of thing. Even though we suffer from racism in our stands and things like booing taking the knee, we’ve long since got rid of monkey chants. We have a long way to go ourselves but we are far ahead of our Mediterranean cousins on this one

He simply has to leave Spain for his own welfare. I know it is giving in to racism but if all players do it in solidarity then it maybe it would stop.

I genuinely think La Liga is actually getting worse for this now.

The crowds seem to be encouraged by the lack of punishment. Last night is was out on show in plain sight and it was almost accepted. Unbelievable

Sadly its nothing new in Spain is it - i remember and England game over there a few years ago and Shaun Wright Philipps getting monkey chants.

Its worrying that the first reaction of the Spanish FA is to blame the player being racially abused.

It kinds of validates his point tho.
it’s normalised - nothing to see here

I dont understand what this chant means - ive never heard it before but i dont watch spanish football. Its well established that continental european teams from eastern ad southern countries are rayhet backward when it comes to matters of race

La Liga and Spain is riddled with racists.

Even the La Liga president, Javier Tebas, came out last night and basically had a pop at Vinicius Jr. over the situation.

I was watching the game with no sound and it all kicked off at one point. I could tell something had been said as Vinicius was going mental towards a section of the crowd behind the goal.

Football in Spain and Italy has been revisit for years.. haven’t seen any improvement.

Big punishments need to be dished out.. but no one will support them.

This is one reason I look at the likes of Bellingham & wonder why he'd put himself through it, by signing for a Spanish team: Real Madrid..

Are we though? Do we have as many racists but they are aware that it is socially unacceptable to be outwardly racist and in doing so they could be banned or arrested? In Spain there is no punishment or social shame for being a racist so their racists can be open about it. I don't know the answer because I don't know these countries as well as I know ours. Do they have a vocal minority of racists or is it a universally held view?.

Dealing with racism by punishing people mostly does the job of keeping it hidden but it doesn't stop people being racists. I'm sure we all know people that are racist and when they think they are in company where they can get away with it they make comments. I believe it is far less prevalent amongst younger people these days so it is something that will die out over time. In general our oldest generation didn't seem to ever learn not to make comments, the next generation seem to have learned to think it and not say it and then you have to drop another generation before people realise that any reason for racism is just factually incorrect.
