Your favourite non-Boro player of all-time, with one caveat

Talking of Shoot the TV show a friend of mine said the first ever Shoot was a 5-0 win for the mackams v Scunthorpe. He reckoned they got the goals in the wrong order and it was dark for the third goal and light again for the fifth. Ps another vote for Pele.

Rodney Jack. Many will never have heard of him. He used to play for Torquay, and I used to get to see his weekly exploits on Westcountry TV. He was just too good for the Division 4. or league 2 or whatever it was called at the time. In his career he never made it to any club more exotic that Crewe. I don't quite understand why.

It's just the first name that came to my head when looking at the question.
He couldn’t do a backflip so used to do a somersault after he scored…

The exotically named Tony Bedeau was in the same team.

To answer the question, Diego Maradona. A Genius.

My first hero as a kid was Marco Van Basten. If it wasn't for his persistent ankle problems, he could have been the best out and out striker of all time for me.

However, again scuppered by injuries (and probably his lifestyle), I still stand by that R9 would of been the greatest player of all time. Had absolutely everything. I remember someone saying he was like Messi & Chrissy Ronaldo combined in one player - can't really argue with that!

Edit - purely for entertainment purposes, can't disagree with Ronaldinho either!

Little footnote - this thread got me thinking, how good where the Nike Joga Bonito adverts!!

I appreciate much of Ronaldinho's charm was about entertainment but how many players have won the World Cup, Champions League and Ballon d'Or (as well as multiple league titles)? He's in a very elite club on that one (of which Bobby Charlton, Zidane and Messi are also members).

I know you weren't suggesting this, but he was far more than style over substance.

Purpose of football is for entertainment first and foremost!

How has Bobby Charlton not been mentioned? Obviously never seen him play live, but I did get sent into a scrum of eager 10-year-olds to get his autograph for my dad when he visited our school or something in Berlin. More recent I'd say Scholesy. Met him in Dubai when he was suspended for a match against Boro and he gently took the **** for being a Boro fan.

I loved Bryan Robson growing up, but obviously he played for us.

A few real stand outs for me are Clarence Seedorf, Del Piero, but if I had pick one, it has to be Ronaldo (R9).

I lived for football and practiced or played every single day.

There is nowhere near enough as much football as today I agree, but there was our weekly feeds. I used to buy any readable football books, facts & records.
I used to watch Football Focus, On The Ball, I watched Best Laws and Charlton a number of times Live at the Boro and Man City,WHU, Spurs in the cups. I watched as my first game at AP English League V Scottish League. Jimmy Johnston, John Grieg, Bobby Lennox, The WHU trio of Moore, Peters, Hurst. and the follow up game in 1972.

During the 70s onwards I have and I'm sure you have seen all the top British internationals and fringe players.
The Home Internationals were a fixture on TV
The Big Match
Midweek Match league cup of other teams and Saint and Greavsie
UEFA English sides were often live on TV
The goals and good bits of play all European Championship competitive games were either live or replayed.
Shoot or ITV regional English games were often highlighted.

Plus I very rarely missed a home live game and went away very often.

There was always plenty of football on TV or go to the game.

Atm I think historically we would have to go back to the late 40s to compete with the crowds we get today or since 1995. I was in odd great gates over the years at AP, but most of the league games in the 1960s waxed and waned from 7k to 15k depending on signings(at anytime then) or a run of results

The only big home one I wasn't at as I wasn't old enough was Oxford Utd 1967.

I have Virgin with all the football as my son and grandson love watching the PL, but I rarely watch any TV football now.

I'll put you down for Ronaldo (R9) then

I don't see it like that personally. Too much tribalism and passion for me to be entertained.
If I am watching a match live I can't relax until we are 4 goals ahead in the second half. Or 3 in the last 10 minutes.

If we win I might sit back and enjoy the highlights. Possibly a draw if we score a late equaliser or something.

But if we lose, not a chance. Even if everyone has been treat to a Thierry Henry style masterclass.

I can't watch football for entertainment only. I struggle to watch a match at all if I don't care who wins.
