The Carabao Cup distraction will cost us points

I feel like pre-empting this, given all our injuries and making it seem inevitable, may mean we surprise ourselves and everyone else and still pick up loads of points over Christmas.

But of course the likely scenario is that we lose every game until Chelsea.

So come on, how many does everyone think the Baggies will put past us? I’ll go for a conservative four. 😁

Success breeds success. I think it's already won us points: it would have been harder to get out of that early season slump without the glimmer of hope provided by the early cup wins.

The fewest cup matches we've had in a promotion season in my time ollowing Boro is 6.

The most is 14.
And that's 5 promotions, for the record.

Plenty of midtable seasons when we've had 3-4 cup matches.

Would you rather win the cup beating Liverpool 5-0 in the final, or get in play-offs with a shot at promotion Stu?

Cup win. Sporting glory and all that. It's an achievement that lasts for ever; I'd take it over guaranteed promotion too. A promotion can, and in all likelihood will, be taken away from you again after 1 PL season.
I wasn’t being serious. I’d probably accept relegation if it meant another piece of silverware (unless it also led to liquidation).

If you look at the League Cup winners since we made it fashionable then there's only Birmingham and Swansea that are not a big club.
If we could win it again I'd happily sack the league off and settle for mid table obscurity 😁

it's only a couple of games......and the chance of glory at the end of it. We're not gonna do any better than the playoffs so we just go for it

We are not going up this season anyway. May as well just have a good go against Chelsea and Villa.
We’ve got a promotion winning team in the injury room.. waiting.

The FA cup might be a bit big a distraction.. but the league cup.. we’re good to go.. might as well plié in with it!

I thought it was obvious I was being daft in OP, but maybe not. I am happy to drop points if it means a League Cup final/win.

Would be a bit of a choker if a couple of pastings from Villa and Chelsea then leave us in lower mid-table (or worse) come February, however.

We are still building a team. If we could win the League Cup and qualify for Europe in February then we can easily reset for the run in! ;)

Didn't effect us under Wilder. We put in some amazing performances and the club looked absolutely unified by it.

Injuries and daft defensive mistakes will cost us points. It cannot be seen as a negative getting to league cup SF. It will also make a few quid in TV money and crowds.

We may as well play the U23s and get knocked out in the 2nd round if this is a pain😂

We aren't getting promoted, so enjoy these cup games 👍

I hope not but we could be 9 points behind the baggies (and possibly Hull) come 5pm on Saturday that's a sizeable gap to make up

Its always good to still be in the mix come April so youre not just one of the also rans and trying to work out who needs to do what to have a mathmatical chance of keeping the season alive

Out of coincidence what was the points gap on the top 6 this time last year?

There's still a lot of football to be played!

Boro to win on Saturday, Silvera, Greenwood and Kavanagh 3-2 Boro

There is a moral to be learned here

If you root around the most beautiful patch of flowers, eventually you will find a cat turd. I think that was one of Jean-Paul Sartre's

Well I think players will up their game to get in the starting line up for the Aston villa and Chelsea games. The likes of Silvera Rogers barlaser Clarke have to use this opportunity when we have no other options and before the injured players return to show why they should start

I don't think the cup is losing us points. What it is doing is giving Carrick no choice but to give some of the kids a chance which is good. McCabe looked go have a good passing range on Tuesday. Kavanagh will benefit from Tuesday. My guess is he will get some game time over Xmas - I'm not expecting Coburn back until January now.

I firmly believe we will have signings in very early. Also I think Hackney, O'Brien and Forss will return by mid- January.

I'm confident we will cope. Whether we get in play-offs won't we down to cup semi finals. More we cannot just do it week in week out at the level required.

Hadn't considered that. We would be in Europe if we won, clearly. What if we got to the final but lost to Liverpool who then got in the Champions League? Does it go to us or the next highest Premier League team?
