Paddy McNair out of contract this Summer

He isn't a natural defender and is very average playing the ball out from the back. As we develop as a squad he will get less game time under Carrick. I think if he wasn't injured we'd be selling this Jan for a nominal fee and saving £10K a week (or whatever he is on)

Funny, I thought he was doing well playing in the back four before his injury and seemed to look after Engel.

I don't think it's a surprise we wouldn't want to renew his contract on existing terms as he will be on a lot. That doesn't mean we wouldn't be interested in a reduced deal.

However, with Fry, Clarke, vdB and Lenihan it maybe suits all parties for him to move on.

He is handy to have, given the injury issues at CB. I dont think we can offer a contract on reduced terms before his current contract expires but even then I dont see a place for him. He hasn’t been a player I have really taken to but I do think he has always given what he could on the pitch.

Not good enough to be first choice in any position but a dependable back-up in several. Would be great if he wasn't a high earner but he is so he doesn't offer good value for money. If we can get him to take a 50% paycut he'd be worth keeping but I suspect we can't.

I think he's a good player, but not good enough to justify the wages we spend on him.
I'd certainly consider a decent offer for him, but we shouldn't be looking to get rid for the sake of getting rid.

Done a decent job for us but I think he’ll move on whether that be this month or free in summer.

We're overstocked at CB currently, Paddy probably the most likely to move on as a result.

That said, wouldn't be surprised with some serious interest in RVDB in the Summer if he carries on his trajectory. We know some big clubs were looking this year, I'd be amazed if they're not again.

He was doing "ok" but always seemed to be last ditch tackling and we looked a lot more composed now as a back 4
I disagree with that and felt we missed him when he got injured.

We look better now because we have players playing in their right positions and Ayling gives us a balance to the team. We always knew McNair was a stop gap at the back but I would also add, that many on here wanted to see him replace Fry.

McNair is the one player for me, that when he plays we do better than when he isnt.

go look at the stats for how often we dont lose when he plays.

we cant offer a contract unless its equal or better than the present one - given the accumulative inflation rate since Paddy signed for us is significant, unless we go up, we wont be in a financial position to do that - and thats just to stand still with the financial, loyalty and appearance payments.

i like the bloke always gives 100% on the pitch and says nothing controversial off it.

We may yet need him before the end of the season, he's been a decent servant and a good player. Always liked him, but he has a chance to make a few quid in the last part of his career.

I'm throwing the challenge flag on that. I've only looked at league matches this season and last, and I've not considered starts and sub appearences.

However:

This season the team has lost 44.4 of its matches, but 46.6% when Paddy has played
Lasts season we lost 32% of matches, but 40% when Paddy played.

I'd not stretch those stats to proving we lose more when he plays, but it certainly doesn't prove we lose less.
