And so it happens again.
Isn't it about time we enshrined freedom of expression in as much protection as blasphemy gets.
Make no bones about it this country shook off the oppression of an organised religion some years ago, if followers of Christianity bowled up at an education establishment demanding " respect" they would be laughed at and ridiculed. Despite the actual influence they still hold they also know their limits.
So why do some ( and it is only some) believers of another side branch of the Abraham brand of religion feel free to "gather peacefully"( yeah, as mobs do) outside a school demanding apologies for the Sin of teaching tolerance.
The said teacher is in hiding.
They do it because it creates fear.
It does this because fellow travellers have beheaded other teacher for the exact same issue and in the EXACT same circumstances.
Why are the Police not arresting the People connected with this ongoing intimidation of those who dare express an open mind.

I'm scared to death to make any comment about this at all. Absolutely petrified.

Offensive, your supporting a mob who find tolerance offensive?? Really?
No, not supporting anyone in particular really. People are free to say whatever they like but with that comes responsibility, which means not intimidating people and issuing death threats. That obviously crosses a line and is completely unacceptable. There are laws to tackle those things already in place I think.

Anyone who does not follow that religion should be allowed to draw mohammed as they like. Anyone who wants to strictly follow that religion should be allowed to think drawing him is wrong.

The issue is when followers of islam (or any religion) start to act aggressive or intimidating to anyone who thinks it's ok to go against their personal religious beliefs, be them christian, mormon, or even moderate muslims. Religious expression and belief is personal, you can't oppress anyone with your own personal mumbo jumbo.

EDIT: removed atheism, because that is the rejection of belief systems

Laws only apply to reasonable and responsible people.
I'm sure the French had laws against the beheading of teachers.
This is the exact same scenario and is developing exactly the same way, why? Because the Maniacs who performed the murder in France had the same guide book as the " Peaceful protesters" in Batley.
Laws won't stop the Religious extremists who make up a tiny minority in an otherwise peaceful belief system.
But, if the behaviour of said maniacs mean that this Imam or that Bishop gets more respect ( is feared) then you will not see the congregation of sheep protesting against any "respect" that was in fact ,earned by fear.

How do they know it was a drawing of him if they never make or view images of him?
good point.

What this really comes down to is that trying to get people to live to your religious beliefs is unacceptable oppression and an infringement on others rights.

If muslims want non-muslims to not draw mohammed, then surely muslims should not wear blended fabrics, eat shellfish (christian), eat beef, show anger (hindu), kill any living creature (buddhism), or get married by someone without a colander on their head (pastafarianism).

Humour is the sharpest weapon ,😀.

Just seen this on the news.

I will be honest and say I dont get what they are protesting about today... The school and the teacher have issued apologies... the teacher has been suspended pending an investigation... What more do they want? him flogged in the street?

Pointing humour at the ridiculousness of religion and the hypocrisy of its preachers has gone on for centuries and long may it continue. i remember being at catholic secondary school in the 80s and watching life of Brian in an RE lesson to this day it one the funniest things i have ever watched . The whole idea of blasphemy to me is nonsense. In my mind Schools should be promoting secularism and discouraging all forms of fundamentalism. i would also be happy for schools not to teach any RE at all. The death threats should be followed up and the perpetrators prosecuted. Having said all that the teacher was incredible stupidity in this day and age to think He would get away with it.

I was brought up in a religious family and did the full Sunday school thins. I was left with the impression that although religions promote the peace and love thing, they also promote if you dont follow our club then you will be damned forever and go to hell.
Fundamentally all religions follow the same ultimate goal, ie following a path that means people of the same faith can live together in harmony. I believe that is something that everyone wants be they religious or not.
Why wind up a community, for something that you will know will irritate them, live and let live.
After my upbringing I am no longer religious, but can see the benefit of humanism instead. Can this be taught in schools ?
