Boring sports or pastimes.

After browsing through the F1 2021 thread and fully respecting that those guys really enjoy it. I personally would rather watch paint dry. Is there any other sports hobbies and pastimes that people do, that you think to.yourself, " Id rather poke your eye out with a rusty.pin."

I struggle to understand what people get out of watching any sport in person where you can't actually see the full contest take place. Cycling, Motorsport, golf. You're just seeing snippets take place, often it's just a few seconds at a time. Each to their own of course.

I saw some of the Olympic triathlon live in 2012. It was as you say: you couldn't really follow the unfolding of events as the cyclists kept whizzing past you. No idea who on the first or second lap etc.
I watched the end of it on tv in a nearby greasy spoon: much more satisfying from a narrative point of view.

I've loved my Swimming as a competitor, but it doesn't make great viewing. It lacks some human value: you can rarely see facial expressions or effort being invested. Also, if it's close, it's very hard to tell whose won in real time, which is unsatisfying.

Absolutely love F1, probably more than Football but easy to see why people find it boring. The sport has done nothing to attract new fans or make races more exciting.

Cricket for me, even watching in person was just awful

Horse racing without betting would not exist - the interest for 99% of spectators is their bet.

F1 can't watch (fast but too little overtaking), Golf except Team golf can't watch.

Funny enough some quite minority sports I can watch such as Speedway, Indoor Cycling and Ice Hockey, probably because they are fast paced and fluid.

I can watch the Olympics if British interest, because I want Team GB to win medals and the medal table is competitive.

For motor racing there is something visceral about it. The roar of the engine, the squeal of the tyres, the smells are unique. That's what I got addicted to. And which is why, even though its the future, I don't think if formual1 e ends up on decent tracks it'll be for me.

Oh and off the track formula 1 is fascinating. On track it's the dullest form of motorsports. Give me touring cars or the amazing WEC any day.

fishing, american football, weightlifting & cross country running

I've got hooked on American Football during lockdown. I've found the punditry excellent in explaining the difference between a dozen burly men charging into each other and a finely planned and precisely executed strategy. Still loads about it I don't understand, and I find some of the rules mind-boggling. Still, I feel I've been well-rewarded for the time I've invested in it.

I think apt of sports it's to do with understanding it. American football is a good example. It's so stop and start a casual observer just can't get into the game. Once you understand the nuances it becomes much more interesting. Same with all sports really.

As an aside, American football has one of my favourite penalties. A player can be cited for "unnecessary roughness "

Which of course implies that some roughness is actually necessary!

Speedway is most boring-4 bikes go round track 4 times then they do it 12 more times
Formula 1 is good for the crashes
Used to watch yank football but got bored
wrestling is awful

Most of others are reasonable or good to watch

Half of the sports in the Olympics, anything that is more arty than sporty.

Anything that isnt a decisive victory ie. cricket for example particularly test match which you watch for days on end to result in a draw.

Chess or things which are more of a pastime.

Cylcists in my experience are extremely tedious, dull people, just like the sport itself. Billiards is another just what is the point. Of Olympic sports i always find swimming the one not to watch.
