“Offensive” train announcement

The typical right wing spin on this is crackers.

It's such an easy thing to fix to be more inclusive - just say "Good afternoon everyone".
How about just ‘Good afternoon’ in case there are any animals on the train, it is only this week, that the government gave direction on recognising animal sentience - the capacity for animals to have feelings, inclusivity all the way.

The same people spouting bile at this will be the ones who had #BeKind all over their social media not that long ago.

If you can make a simple and easy alteration to a greeting so as to include everyone then it shows you up if you're not prepared to do it. It's not about everyone having to accept the latest terms and being au fait with complicated vocabulary, it's just simple politeness and good manners.
So make the alteration, no need to apologise. I mean really who cares? My best mate calls me by a shortened version of my name. I used to complain, what's the point, he is identifying who he is speaking to.

Load of old nonsense

The other thing that I think is important is that people are allowed to make an honest mistake. Using the traditional "Good afternoon ladies and gentleman, boys and girls" is something so ingrained in a lot of people that it is their default. I'm pretty certain the person saying it wouldn't have intended any offence and so the way to deal with it is supportively. Not being overly critical but supporting people to be more inclusive.

There has been a bit too much finger pointing and an inability of people to recognise where honest mistakes are just that, honest.

I think once again it's pretty good manners to apologise if someone is complaining.

Seems a really strange thing for a RMT Rep to do, as the announcer will no doubt be hauled over the coals for this. Attention seeking tosser.

Yup I agree. Did the train announcer do something wrong? I don't think he did. He was polite. Remember offense is never given it is always taken.

It's a non event, the issue lies completely with someone who is so self absorbed they take offence when clearly non is intended. That for me is the salient point, no offence was intended, clearly. So given that why would someone feel offended? That is a much more realistic question.

I don't know if they were offended as I'm not them, they were unhappy enough to complain. Whether I think someone's complaint is valid or baseless I think I'd always start the process by apologising - it costs you nothing and it helps repair any damage that might have been done.

Did the announcer do "something wrong"? Well, LNER clearly think it wasn't what they'd expect. I'd prefer to not say they did something wrong but they used an older style of greeting which needs modifying to make it a bit more inclusive. It's possible to resolve the issue without a load of finger pointing and blame being thrown about.

It must be hard being non-binary, it isn't yet accepted by that many people and people should be free to identify however they want in my opinion.

I have no doubt at all, though, that the main purpose of this tweet was to get likes and retweets, as is the case with the vast majority of tweets by the vast majority of people.

If they hadn't sent that tweet, would they have lay awake that night pondering this ordeal? Of course not.

They are free to identify as they please, obviously. However, everyone else is free to be completely unaware of how they identify, and whether their ignorance causes offence. It was accidental and should never have been reported on.

I'm sorry. You have to be an absolute melt (none gender specific) to moan about this.

I read this shaking me head. A true 'the world's gone mad' moment. The fact its actually 'news' is every bit as woeful.

I read the other day that a school teacher at a girls school ended his lesson with 'have a good weekend girls'. He was hauled in front of the head teacher on the Monday because one of them was offended. The girl in question had told her parents she identified as a boy. The head teacher knew but didn't tell the teacher in question. What the fecks he meant to do?

It's a girls school but he's been told he needs to be none gender specific.... Madness🙄

Well that was my point, they tweeted it because it was an open goal in terms of likes and retweets, not because they were genuinely deeply offended, they knew it was 100% without intent.

How does that work? Can you go to an all-girls school if you identify as a boy?

FFS, I was going to say my true thoughts on this but then realized that I would probably leave myself wide open for a barrage of criticism so let's just say that that this "woke" thing is getting a tad ridiculous!! Goodnight all, UTB.

Good afternoon sentient beings
Good afternoon customers
Good afternoon entities in solid form
Now then all
Right then, you’ve boarded, next station Grantham
Oh just F off the lot of you feckers....have a shiit journey, I hope you all spill you pss weak cup of extortionately priced beverage in you lap when we go over some points or sun warped lines
🤷🏻‍♂️
I know I’m getting old as I find each day more baffling than the last.

What mistake. Get a grip.

Anyone who uses the term 'woke' as an insult is just making themselves look like an ignorant, out of touch, self centred nob. See also 'virtue signalling', 'social justice warrior', 'snowflake', 'bleeding heart' and 'do-gooder'. What kind of people think that trying to be considerate and civil and do the right thing are qualities to be sneered at? It costs nothing to be nice to other people even if those people may not be exactly the same as you are.

I agree with you to a point. However, I am starting to wonder whether its 'wokeness' that is actually out of touch. There's no doubt that its accepted by the 'media class' (and as someone who works in and around that industry and uses social media etc I am not opposed to it), but is it accepted by 'the people'? I think that's what GazMFC and the OP were maybe getting at.
