I think we have almost exactly the same experience. I too was an expert witness. I concur with your conclusion.I was expert witness a couple of times in the High Court in some business cases.
I like to think I have a little bit about me but the top Barristers were on another level and the judges astonishlingly clever.
By the time I's worked out what they were saying they two points further on.
That said, in both cases, whoever paid out more for their legal team won..... almost irrespective of the case.
On one occasion the Judge stopped the case and told everyone to leave apart from me, the defense and prosecution Legal teams. He said to the defense, you have not managed to disprove anything (me) had said or brought in evidence. Stop wasting (my) time and let him go home.
The jury were recalled told going forward my written statement will not be argued with and thanked me. It was the day England whipped Croatia, and I was home to watch it. From writing my statement to the eventual guilty took almost 2 years.
