True evil is amongst us

I'm not sure what the argument is here, given that Sally Clark wasn't subject to any death penalty. I've already stated I don't support it in any cases where there could be a doubt, and I would only be in favour at a judge's discretion, not a blanket statutory punishment. Her conviction was overturned on appeal as well.
Death penalty is far too kind, we need to employ something that would truly make them suffer.

Read the story just now on Sky News. More heads need to roll for this horrible crime. These safeguarding agencies need disbanding and built back again from the ground up. 5 referrals and still this completely innocent little girl is killed.

I hope those who didn't act on the referrals feel guilt for the rest of their lives.
It’s a very complex situation. There are many local authorities performing well and keeping countless children safe (you don’t hear about this stories).

There are however struggling authorities who can’t recruit and retain decent staff. Preventative services have been stripped right down which is also having a huge impact .

Unis are seeing a downturn in numbers on their social work courses meaning there’s less people coming into the profession and with the current climate of demonising social workers I can’t see that changing anytime soon.

There wasn't doubt at the time of the conviction. If there was she would have been acquitted. She was a child murderer in the eyes of the jury and was given a life sentence. If the judge had used your rationale he would have given her the death penalty and she might have been executed before her conviction was overturned.

Any conviction has a right of appeal, I am not suggesting people be executed before their right to appeal has been exercised.

State sponsored murder is still murder and is not a deterrent as America and other countries is proof positive of. Additionally the cost of these life ending drugs are expensive, it costs more to execute prisoners in America than keep them locked up for example.

The death penalty serves no purpose than giving the families of the bereaved some sense of justice however, it doesn't bring their loved ones back. Throw in the mix the number of wrongful convictions that have seen innocent people die or spend huge chunks of their life on death row before being released and the issues are obvious.

There will always be cases of wrongful convictions.

Judges have biases like everyone else, if they are a religious zealot (eye for eye) they would be more inclined to serve this sentence where they are fit, not because of the law bit because of their religious leanings. (Agaian see America for proof of this) Lastly as previously stated but for me this is the most important, state sponsored murder, is still murder.

Firstly sentencing is always at the judges discretion whoever is staying that as an argumentbfor state sponsored murder. Secondly here's a snippet from when Britain still had the death penalty.

In the UK, reviews prompted by the Criminal Cases Review Commission have resulted in one pardon and three exonerations for people executed between 1950 and 1953 (when the execution rate in England and Wales averaged 17 per year), with compensation being paid.

Judicial murder is a type of wrongful execution, judges make mistakes, police have been known to fabricate or misrepresent evidence to get conviction, the judge should not be the arbiter of somebody's life given that innocent people have and still get exexuted and it's simply murder dressed as justice.

Edit - 3 wrongful deaths from 51 executions. Almost 6% of executions over a 3 year period killed innocent people. But yeah state murdering is a great idea.

You can imagine how that would feel. Which is why I would only support the death penalty being in place at a judge's discretion for severe crimes where there is no reasonable doubt as to the perpetrator's guilt.
Some judges doni know what day it is never mind exercising discretion.

Who was talking about that
It the usual political trick of saying 'people have been saying'. The only purpose it serves is to start dishonest debates, either that or it is something Priti Patel is pushing again who is a know advocate of the death penalty.

Watch any right wing politician giving dishonest comments on any subject and 'people have been saying' will come up a huge amount especially in America, it was a favorite technique of Trump and his cronies. https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...1e59de-317e-11e6-8ff7-7b6c1998b7a0_story.html

The facts are well established on the death penalty.
1. it is not a deterrent.
2. Innocent people get killed.
3. It is expensive, in most cases more expensive than keeping them locked up forever.
4. It is still murder, we don't steal from thieves, we don't rape rapists we lock them up, murder should be held to the same standard.

I get that it is a emotive subject but I don't get it when people start saying things like; 'Only when it is proven beyond doubt' or 'when you are a 100% certain'

Watching the news again tonight, heartbreaking, so upsetting, the beautiful little girl, with the lovely smile & big, blue beautiful eyes

Why are their such evil people in this world

25 years? Life should be life
Hopefully someone gets them in prison

The actual mother gets 8 years😒

What mother watches her partner abuse and eventually kill her own child? Now f*cked up do you have to be.

I imagine she will be out in 4-6 and carrying on with her life. Hopefully an appeal will send her down for longer.

I would say she is every bit as guilty as the partner who killed her child whilst she watched and made jokes.

I am not saying this absolves her but as the press have reported the mother is mentally under developed, she is guilty but I understand the sentencing from the judge with this mitigation in mind. That being said this whole scenario is just stomach churning, let down by SS and her Mother and died an agonising death, how can that not pull on everyone's heartstrings.

So if it’s a no to the death penalty make it hard Labour. 7 days a week 12 hours a day breaking rocks. That should break them

So slavery instead.

How about demonstrate we are better as a society than slavery or murder. They forfeit their right to be in society and rightfully are locked away for these crimes but essentially creating prison concentration camps full of slave labour is not the answer. Coming down to their level is never the answer.

We need to be a lot tougher than we are, they should be suffering everyday for a long long time
