Former Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder is the early favourite with the bookmakers to replace Michael Appleton at Blackpool. The Seasiders are searching for a new boss after sacking Appleton today.

Former Portsmouth, Oxford United and Lincoln City boss Appleton was relieved of his duties after just seven months in charge. A run of just one win in 11 matches cost Appleton his job. Assistant head coach David Kerslake has also left Blackpool, who are currently second-from-bottom in the standings.

Fourth-placed Boro are scheduled to entertain Blackpool at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday, February 4. A Blackpool statement read: "Blackpool Football Club has today relieved Michael Appleton of his duties as Head Coach.

"Assistant Head Coach David Kerslake will also be leaving with Michael. The Club would like to thank Michael and David for their efforts during their time at Bloomfield Road and wish them all the best for the future.

"The Club hope to be able to announce a new Head Coach in the coming days."

Lazy journalism. I'm sure he will be linked with any champo job going, simply because he is out of work. Not sure if he will be in any rush to get back, as no doubt still being paid by Boro. I can see him waiting until the summer, unless a really good job becomes available.

I hope they have a squad ready for the overlapping wilderbacks in a 3-5-2 because that's the only formation he is capable of playing

Journalists often get it wrong, but if it has any truth in their assertion, it would be an interesting watch (y)
