“Why have Sunderland often struggled when facing Middlesbrough away?” [Roker Report] 31/01/24.

I thought our lot had chips on their shoulders, but the deckchairs take the biscuit. They have bigger rivalries with Coventry and Leeds?!

This business with Coventry, because they relegated them nearly fifty years ago and Leeds because they beat them fifty years ago, though it’s rarely mentioned!

On that basis we have bigger rivalries with Leicester and Chelsea than them.

Ian Beale really has his work cut out up there.

I think it's displacement. What they say about us is what they worry about Newcastle thinking of them.

In my lifetime the big things for Newcastle have been almost winning the league vs Fergie and Utd, the FA cup finals vs Arsenal, beating Barcelona...

Even this season - the Newcastle fans I know were way more excited by their win against PSG than they were with the FA cup win vs Sunderland. They were excited to be drawn against Sunderland of course, I'm not denying that. But the match itself was just a walkover.

Our games against Newcastle and Sunderland have only ceased to be lesser than Tyne-Wear yet still well contested local affairs since we we've been notably better than Sunderland and had players to rival Newcastle and won a trophy.

It seems to be the one thing they both agree on, though previous generations didn't have this bizarre reverse snobbery of trying to desperately insist on it not being a derby.

The proof is in the reactions at the end of the day. The fact there's an article on it says plenty enough.

We win more in recent years because we have generally been a better team than them. All this complaining we’re not a derby and we lift our game for it is just an excuse to make themselves feel better, a big team gets a result regardless, they don’t let an atmosphere get to them, it’s such a small time mentality. You can tell they play infront of an artificially inflated crowd.

brought up in a mackem stronghold in Wingate and they do not consider playing us as a derby .... never will as they see Boro a yorkshire team and not a North Eastern team .... Only Newcastle is a derby to them and to be fair we should not consider Sland a derby there is a world of difference between us , culturally and linguistically ... they talk like geordies ... hull talk more like us . Our derbies are with Pools and Darlo ... Mackem Land is in Geordie Land along with Gats heeeed and Shields

A predictable take from Sunderland fans...''Boro don't matter''.

Odd then that their team were a complete no show in Englands biggest and most passionate derby a few weeks back.

I've been watching Boro nigh on 50 years. The reason we have a good record over Sunderland? As a rule, we are just better than them.

When I lived in Sooth Shields, there were almost as many Skunks as Deckchairs. I lived in Harton, and in those days the Buses from Sunlun and Newcastle turned round at Horsely Hill. There were sometimes scraps at the stop outside the shops when both were at home on a match-day.

Scunthorpe United see Hull City as their main and bitter rivals.
Hull City laugh at this and see Leeds United and Sheffield United as our main and bitter rivals.
Leeds United laugh at this and see Man United as their main and bitter rivals.
Man United laugh at this and see Liverpool as their main and bitter rivals.

Wingate is literally closer to Middlesbrough than Newcastle; Sunderland will turn up Sunday with we hate Berra chants etc, teams have more than one rival, Boro & Sunderland can be a derby without being the main one within a region I.e Forest vs Derby >>> Forest vs Leicester. Or Cardiff vs Swansea >>> Cardiff vs Bristol, I could go on. This never used to be a debate and very much a modern thing and it happens in most fan bases. Rotherham hate Wednesday who hate United and Leeds more.. just how football works.

Ahhh this old chestnut from the Mackems… I’m honestly not arsed what they think about it, I want the players to put on a good performance us to provide a good atmosphere and to enjoy a few beers and a day out with the lads. If they’d prefer Coventry away so be it… they’ll have that chance, I’ll have a good day out regardless.

I think the FA Cup defeat finally brought it home that they might be the Mags local rivals but they are years and years away from competing with them 11 v 11 on the pitch ...

Look at our rivalry with Newcastle we haven't played them since the 2009/10 season so its a distant memory. It will be strange when we eventually play them again in a competitive game (when ever that will be)

We were regularly playing them in the late 80s/early 90s whether it be the league, league cup or ZDS

blink and you'll miss the mackems victories here ... (here's 1 i made earlier)

EDIT Notice the segregation in the South Stand when they score off the penalty it's practically a seat or two! (And the 2-2 draw at the end of the video)

As this fixture seems to be so frivolous and trivial for sunderland and their fans im amazed they even sold any tickets

And most of those who think it’s a derby are from Teesside, who don’t like being seen as insignificant in comparison to Newcastle, and Sunderland

Imagine trying to claim the only insignificant club among those 3 is the only one to win a trophy in 50 years
Apart from Hartlepool, they are the only north east club to play in league one in recent memory

The answer to why they say this lies in the first line of the article.......

"And most of those who think it’s a derby are from Teesside, who don’t like being seen as insignificant......"

They like to try and make us feel insignificant, does it work, no. Do we buy it, no. But let them crack on. I'm sure its mainly 'online Mackems' who tend to think this way anyway. The twitter troll types.

Liverpool despise Scunthorpe, and the circle is complete.
