Im frustrated with this season but

Under Michael Carrick and the way he wants his team to play football it was always going to take time and not an over night success.

We watched some awful games over the years under various managers and we always for the most part where set up pretty defensive in games.

We have a young manager learning his craft in his first full season, of course he is going to make mistakes but some of the football we have seen over the last season has been a breath of fresh air.

What happens the rest of this season will be what it is, learning, trying new things and giving these young players valuable experience going forward and if we make the play offs great. Although it is frustrating to see some of the points we have dropped this season, which is why I think we will miss out.

We have some players with great potential and some average championship players, what is crystal clear and always has been is getting that striker that can put the ball in the net, this comes down to the recruitment team and Steve Gibson, if we get that then I'm sure next season we will be in the mix for promotion.

It's just frustrating as we shoot ourselves in the foot and we have got to be up there as the team to of dropped the most points from winning position

100% agree with this but I think with all younger squads they will go through this stage in there careers, hopefully they learn from the mistakes going forward. It will be a huge season for Michael Carrick next season regardless of what happens this season.

I reckon MC himself will be frustrated the way the seasons gone (Injuries, international call ups and perhaps a couple of new signings not getting over the line) so him as much as any of us will be looking forward to finishing the season strong to be able to sell the club to potential new players in the summer. He'll know what his game plan is and where current players fit, who he wants out and numerous new players he'll want to bring in. He's learning and he'll want to be a success, its so frustrating trying to believe and have faith in the long term vision of a young manager and the new ethos of the club but hopefully in time it all pays off.

The trouble is when any young player gets any good we sell them on how we get out the cycle when we sell our best players each summer and
sign 7-8 young players. It's a cycle that feels trapped

Injury crisis combined with int'l duty.

Medium to long term, if we continue on this path I think we will be OK. Signings like VDB (going to be a class act), Rodgers (good profit, but would be have been good if he stayed), Dieng (improvement on what we had), Bangura (raw but I think will be good) etc. Add to the quality that we already have.

You cant expect to lose 8, 9, 12, 14 players and expect to be ripping up the league.

We will be OK.

I think the worry I've got is that we will go backwards again next season. We will likely lose Hackney. I doubt Howson will get a new contract.

If we recruit in the same way we did last summer, we will almost certainly be weaker again next season. We are going to have to look to bring some experience in whether that's some of the players that are already here on loan or other players.

CM is going to be a problem and it's not an area of the pitch you want to take gambles. I think we need to look to spend and bring a known quantity in.

Loathe to mention Brentford as the comparisons are overdone but worth remembering it wasn't all plain sailing for them either.

They played some great football in the years preceding their promotion, but I suspect had many of the same frustrations we do now until it finally all came together. It didn't happen overnight.

Patience is key and that's much easier if the football is easier on the eye and we have a go at teams.

I firmly believe we're on the right track.

We are currently sat 12th in the table and much closer on points to the relegation places than we are the top 4.

We finished 5th & 7th under Pulis and he was chased out of the club also 7th under Wilder.

There's not many season's where we've been sat where we are now at this stage of the season where everyone is 100% behind the manager which says a lot about the rolls of the dice were getting but the calamity we have in letting stupid goals in must be related to the way we play and set the team up tactically, they happen every week ffs!

My main reason for being frustrated is because I think we are wasting the time we have with Carrick. We saw last season what he can do with a squad that is capable of promotion but instead of backing him and giving him a chance of continuing for a full season with that level of resource we've scaled back and given him a midtable squad. If we do it again this summer he won't hang around forever. Timing is everything in football and having the right man in charge at the same time as having a squad capable of promotion takes a bit of luck and/or a lot of money. I appreciate the idea that we are trying to be more sustainable financially but we're going to waste our time with Carrick by under-resourcing his team and I fear the fallout will be to hire someone not as good as his replacement and then over-resource them like we did when we hired Monk. That'll set us back again and the never ending championship mid-table merry-go-round will carry on.

I'm not sure everyone is behind the manager as it's frustrating to be in this postion in the table we should be doing alot better we've regressed from last season I know that was due to reliance on loans but Scott is meant to be some transfer guru and not seen the fruits yet

I think the difference is, at least in my opinion, that Carrick is doing pretty well with these players. I personally don't think the squad is strong enough to mount a real serious promotion challenge no matter who is in charge of them. I think Carrick is probably getting the best of them

Under Pulis he had a top two squad. Playing Assombalonga over Bamford was an absolute crime.. we played some of the worst football I have ever seen. Was over the moon that we finished 7th.. i'd heard that if we had finished top 6 he was going to get a contract extension!

Ive thought since the beginning of the season that it wont be our year - squad is just not quite there yet but with this season as experience and a few additions next year we could be right up there

Also the teams coming down look weaker - Sheff Utd look terrible off the field as well as on it, Burnley look garbage and Notts F or Everton could implode - almost want Luton to stay up for that reason.

On MC - maybe not making the play offs will keep bigger clubs away from him also?

The same way Brentford did. So long as the over all trend is one of improvement each season, the system works.

We did regress from last season; it happened the moment the loan players went back. The difference with the current system is we get money when our best players leave, instead of sweet FA.

I do think there is a danger of projecting our frustrations onto MC. I do not assume he shares your frustration: there's nothing I've heard from him that makes me think he's not fully on board with the long term project or the system of operation.

While I too would like him to stay as long as possible, he will be gone one way or another in future whatever we do. I would not, therefore, look to change our long term strategy for the sake of keeping him a bit longer.

We're definitely on the right track and the football the last 15 months has been some of the best I've seen us play, particularly in the same period as now last season when we were scoring freely and I felt we were going to win every game.

While extremely unlucky with injuries, I think the key issue this season has not being able to put teams away. We have often gone ahead and then failed either to score another goal or protect the lead. We also had a few games like West Brom H where we absolutely dominated and only won 1-0.

I'm not sure our position is false either. For every game like yesterday's where we (arguably) deserved three points there have been games where we picked up three and probably didn't deserve it (Leicester H, Swansea A for example). This will always happen in the Championship and I still think we could hit the playoffs but will need a very good run.

Positives:

GK:
Dieng has solved our GK problems. We've had some shockers in goal Lumley, Stojanovic, Roberts, Archer, Bettinelli, Pears when he was too young. Yes Steffen was ok, last year, but we've improved on him, AND we own Diengs contract AND he suits playing out from the back.

D:
Rav Van Den Berg - what a find. Now that he seems to be selected at CB as well, he will be getting great experience. He had only started 4 career matches before joining us, he will start next season with 40 starts under his belt and ready to form a partnership

Thomas/Ayling - getting a dress rehearsal to see if they are good enough for next season. If one or both are, they can slot in already being used to the team and tactics

Bangura - pace and skill, think he'll be warmed up and ready to go in September

M:
Hackney hasn't had second season syndrome, he's still doing well (although not fully fit right now)

Wingers and 10:
Forss - goal machine
Jones - back to his best, probably better than ever actually
Azaz has 6 months to integrate before hitting the ground running next season

CF:
Lath will have 20 games under his belt and will be better for it next year

Add 3 big signings to that core and we are good to go
