Steve Wright has died....

I remember when I was about 14, so 40 odd years ago and he was the regular host of the R1 roadshow. It was a truly awful Summer, weather wise and every day he would talk about the fantastic weather and the audience would be cheering away. I was so naive that I believed him for weeks until the roadshow was in Saltburn, or somewhere else fairly local and it was hoying it down.

I did the long drive South this afternnon and evening . I hardly ever listen to Radio 2 but strangely decided to have it on for all the journey. After driving for 3 hours the sad news first came on the 5pm news. The presenters were not given advance warning. the lady reading the traffic news broke down - it was very emotional.

They said he had a show on Sunday, and no one new he was ill, so everyone seemed to be in shock and the presenters there seem like a family.

I remember in the 80s listening to him on Radio 1 on AM in our old fella's van. Our Dad loved him, especially Mr Angry.
RIP.

He was radio 1 no one came close.

Some amazing tributes from his radio peers across every station. Including those he never worked for and they all say the same

no one understood radio like Steve

It’s been a long while since I was shucketh to the core on the death of a celebrity… 😢

I had a double take as Sara cox announced it this afternoon and my stomach churned a bit…

I felt genuinely sad at the news and tried to comprehend the reason as I listened to moving tributes, Sara struggled at times to get through the moving comments from his multitude of fans…

I think the reason for my sadness is the fact I’ve grown up since the early 80s listening to this legend… it’s opened up my mortality as well 🙁 he will be truly missed 😢😢
