New UK population estimates published

Ridiculous for a country this size - France is twice as big and has a smaller population
If we had the same population density as France we'd have 28m people. We need to remove 40m people from the country, so when do you leave?

Amazingly if we quadrupled our population we still wouldn't have the same population density as Bangladesh.

Problem is folk surviving longer, getting lots of expensive to treat ailments. The productive part of the population who pay for such treatment is shrinking. Birth rate is well below replacement.
Yep that was one of the arguments for immigration as migrants are typically younger and able to work and contribute to the NHS to help support the older retired population but the older population are more likely to be against immigration, when they need migrants, oh the irony!

The UK's population density varies a lot from region to region.

I would say the South East of England is densly populated - I believe over 55% of the UK's population lives in that one region. There are already problems with guaranteed water supply all the end round hence the Thames Water permanent hose pipe ban. As the supply of clean water shrinks through increased global warming and the demand increases the problem will only increase. Also the housing crisis in the UK is most acute there.

Just turned 66 this January so now get my pension and my extra private pension that I have been paying into while working. Worked for 35 years on top of my degree. Now will pay £3000 tax for next year and maybe more in the future so you will not have to worry about supporting me!
