Back in September, in the early part of this season, perhaps the most exciting part of our game at Hillsborough was the home fans throwing tennis balls on to the pitch, in protest over their club's ownership. It was a wretched game and probably the lowest point of our season. The first half in particular was dire, with either side hardly capable of stringing two passes together. Despite Anthony Musaba netting before half-time, we clawed our way back into the game second half with Darragh Lenihan firing past Vasquez into the Wednesday goal. Matt Crooks and Sammy Silvera went close, and we could have sealed the points. But it was a very poor game, with little rhythm, and it was the Owls, right on the 90 minutes, who nearly got the vital winner. Wednesday had experienced the joy of promotion after two years in the old Division Three [EFL 1] and were hoping the momentum would continue into this season, but they had almost as poor start as Boro. At the end of the game, we were rooted to the bottom of the table with 2 points out of a possible 21, with Owls above us on goal-difference!

[Boro were anchored to the bottom of the table last time we met Wednesday at their place].

[Darragh Lenihan saved our bacon with the equaliser in a very poor game]

Although Darren Moore had done a superb job achieving promotion with the Owls through the play-offs in 2022/23, he was inexplicably sacked in June 2022 and replaced by Spaniard Exisco Munoz, who Managed 12 games in just under three months! German, Danny Rhol currently has the job as Manager and has steadied the ship, improved their form, particularly of late, but they remain in a precarious position: second bottom, 19 points above Rotherham, but with the same points as Huddersfield and Birmingham above them. Considering our shaky start to this campaign, the gap between us is now16 points. With seven games to go, Wednesday are still in the battle to stop the drop. With a sell-out away end, they'll be 2000 Owls fans at the Riverside today, adding to what should be a special atmosphere.(y)

Michael Carrick was "delighted" with the overall performance at Southampton on Good Friday, only disappointed we didn't nick the win right at the end. It wasn't without its mistakes: some of our passing could have been tighter, and we could have taken greater advantage of our possession in the area around their box, but to come away with a point from fourth-placed Southampton was no mean feat given their excellent home record: only two defeats and ten wins in the last twelve, we did very well given that challenge.

Said Carrick in his post-match interview:

It was one of those games, where there was a lot of good football played....obviously going one-nil down the boys spirit was unbelievable really. We've taken a few hits again lately and, when you see the bench with the young boys on and one centre-half fit, it could have been easy to be a long day. I thought the boys were unbelievable: kept going, playing some good football, defended well at times. We feel we could have scored more. [I`m] delighted for them. It would have been a tough one to lose after all that effort. [Southampton] tend to have a lot of possession....and we allowed them to have it in certain areas. I thought we defended the box pretty well. I can't fault the boys, I'm so proud of them. It would have been easy in that situation to feel sorry for ourselves, but.....to get the point is probably just enough for the boys to be happy enough to be happy with themselves today.

[The Unlikely lad: Alex Gilbert provided the vital cross to Latte Lath to seal a point at St Mary`s]

1711962045016.png
["We're Boro! We're barmy!" Our fans going "daft" in that corner after Latte Lath's header condemned Southampton to a solitary point ].

Carrick was smiling when asked about the Boro fans who'd made the long trip to the South Coast:
The support again in numbers, to come so far away is fantastic. The away support is....the way they get behind us, even the first half when we go a goal down, the support was there. And we gave them something to smile about on the way home. There's a good little kind of run really [developing]...and we want to keep that going. It's not an easy game [Monday]. Sheffield Wednesday, have improved a lot in terms of results [so] that`l be a challenge for us. The boys will recover well and be ready for that when it comes around.

Wednesday arrive with a possible eight players out of the squad with injuries [sounds familiar] with Danny Rhol hoping his team can build on their tough 1-1 draw against Swansea on Good Friday.

We have to think about ourselves and focus on playing our own game. Three points today would still keep us in touching distance of Norwich, who face a Leicester City side with something to prove. Norwich's game after that is an East Anglian derby against fierce rivals Ipswich Town at Carrow Road. It's not all over till it's all over. Like Carrick said before Southampton, he wants us to get to the play-offs or, failing that, to finish strongly going into the summer. We both need the points for different reasons. Let's hope we grasp the nettle and take the three points today at home.

We can do this!

Come On Boro!

Championship Table and Fixtures:

Leicester have blown what was a seventeen point lead and fallen in to the play-offs following a terrible run of form, inspite of sustaining a fit squad, but Ipswich and Leeds have come good at the right time. Ipswich have done amazingly well, having only been promoted at the end of last season. They don't just have a "well-organised" squad who do the job, they have a habit of scoring goals - 81 so far this season - 9 more than Leeds in second. Leeds should beat Hull at Elland Road, with the Tigers having been around the play-offs almost all season, but recently having a poor run of form. It's all up for grabs. At this stage of the season, every game is critical.

Middlesbrough v Sheffield Wednesday injury latest: Eight ruled out and seven are doubts

The latest team news and injury updates ahead of Sheffield Wednesday's visit to Championship rivals Middlesbrough.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is sweating on the fitness of a number of players ahead of a potentially pivotal week in the battle to remain in the Championship.

The Owls face two challenging away days over the next week, as Monday's trip to Middlesbrough is quickly followed by a visit to fellow strugglers Queens Park Rangers on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking about the injury situation following Friday's draw with Swansea City, the Wednesday boss said: “Ian Poveda tried to come back, there’s Josh Windass, and I think if you look at these names they are players that can make the difference on the pitch. It’s difficult to say (who will be available on Monday), it’s just two days. It may be that somebody can be available for the bench, but maybe not.

[Wednesday were winless when Danny Rhol took over towards the end of October].

With problems still ongoing in the Boardroom, it's been a difficult period for the newly promoted club. With three Managers in one season, an unbalanced squad of older players and young hopefuls, it's not been an easy watch for Owls fans. But Rhol has been plugging away and has given the team some shape, making them harder to beat, but their defence remains a big problem, having shipped 62 goals so far this season. Rhol has seen his side lose 6-0 to Ipswich and 2-0 to Leeds during March, but they beat local rivals Rotherham [1-0] and Plymouth [1-0]. Last time out, Swansea scored late to deny them taking the three points at home.

[Wednesday take all three points against Plymouth].

Rhol believes his team needs to be more "ruthless" and basically get stuck in to the opposition. His team have had good spells during games, but not taken advantage of possession. According to Sky Sports, Rhol had this to say after the Swansea game:
[Edit]
"We will take the point. In our situation, every point is important. We are disappointed because in the second half we created so many chances.

"We conceded, for me, what was a goal too easily given away from the corner. This week we spoke about getting the basics right and running for each other. I feel we did this today and if we continue like this we give ourselves a big chance.

"There was a handball for Swansea's equaliser, and it was a clear foul on Ike (Ugbo) so we should have had a penalty. This is disappointing, but we will not use it as an excuse. We weren't ruthless enough in both boxes.

"We went right until the end to try and get a winner. The atmosphere was fantastic, the fans really pushed us on the pitch, and I think we should take the positives from this game.

"If someone had told me in September we would be this close to getting over the line I would take it. We are close because of how well we have done in the last weeks.

"It's frustrating we haven't come away with the win, but now we're only in the bottom three on goal difference. On Monday we have another big game at Middlesbrough, and we will be going there to win."

Nice little win for us today. I don't think we will score a hatfull but we should be too good for Wednesday.

Interestingly enough at 1.87 for a Boro win, it's too high.

Sheffield Wednesday - Ones to watch:

Anthony Musaba is the Owls top scorer [6 goals + 3 assists], followed by Ike Ugbo [6 + 1], Bailey Cadamarteri [5+1], Josh Windass [4+2] and former Boro player Marvin Johnson [3+4]. 15 players have scored for Owls in the league so far.

Star Man - Barry Bannan

Barry Bannan is one of those players who seems to have been with the owls for decades! He's one of those players who are like a wasp in a space-suit. A nuisance and a threat to play against, but you would always want him in the team on your side. Now 34, the Scottish midfielder has made 359 appearances and scored 29 goals since signing in 2015.

A very good morning to you roofie. It's a beautiful day down south. Sat in my local watching Leicester and drinking my first pint of carling.

Hope your day is going well and more importantly ends well.

And to you too, sir.
Glad foxes have just equalised. Will be even happier if they win.
It's another "big" game for us. I hope we don't do a Blackburn, but we seem to be on an "up".

We have been better off late but... Bottom of the table teams do seem to cause an issue for us.

I'll be having a small interest on the Boro win today. We have been pretty solid for a few games now. Carrick seems to be coaching a slightly different way to remove the weaknesses at the back.

Chance for the young-uns ?
Would love to see Woolston and Finch get a chance.
So long as we win. Don't care if Gilbert scores with his arz (y)

Whilst I understand the desire from fans to have a look at the kids, whilst they're it's a chance of playoffs, Carrick won't do that and quite rightly so.

Underwhelming.
Doesn't make me want to rush to the ground early in the rain.

Then again Ashley Fletcher on bench for them.
Times could be worse 😀

Thomas in place of Engel?
Might be the lads chance to shine. Not a bad player, but needs that confidence back. Sure Carrick told him what he wants (y)
