* The Unofficial "Official" Boro v Sheffield Wednesday [04/24] Match-Day Thread *

It is. We’re what, 6 points off? Every team ahead of us has at least one game in hand. We’re banking on 4 teams falling away and us winning every game.

It’s not over yet. Today is a prime example that it’s not. Every team we wanted to lose today has done so far and we won. Hopefully Leeds beat Hull too.

All we can is do our bit from now and see what happens. But it’s not over.

You’re not likely to see if any of them are good enough from ten minutes at the end of one game playing out a win.

Were any of us any closer to knowing if Law McCabe is good enough off the back of the 15 minutes he got coming on when we hammered Preston at home?

Starting to get on my nerves people going on and on about bringing on The Kids™️ all the time at this point. You might see the season as done and dusted, Carrick obviously wants to try and finish as strong as possible trying to win games instead of just handing out a load of debuts.

It’s about being realistic. It’s a very slim chance and relies upon both other teams slipping and us winning consistently. It’s just not going to happen.

We threw Hackney in and he saved us a transfer, we have youngsters apparently being courted by the likes of Man Utd, Liverpool etc.

I refuse to believe they’re not better than the likes of Silvera, Gilbert etc. Get a proper look at them instead of throwing Silvera up-front in a game that’s done and dusted.

All the results going for us today too. Great day.
Aye, those above us first and foremost obviously.

Also not that it really affects the end of our season, but the deckchairs getting another good bumming at home is not unwelcome either.

The hope will kill you Diego. I earmarked a 10th place finish before the season started and still can’t see any different.

Tbf then you must be over the moon with Boro this season mate.
I mean for us to continue to achieve your pre-judged level of our fully fit squad last summer, despite having an injury crisis (wiping out up to two thirds of the first team for half the season) the likes of which we've never seen before, is absolutely amazing.

It's not, it's just very unlikely. They'd be total losers just to throw the towel in now. Realistically they need to win every game, which is a massive and highly unlikely task but that doesn't mean they shouldn't try and win every game.
Fans can give up, (some did in September!) but the team can't.

God, you lot don’t like it when someone’s right do you?

We didn’t have those injuries when we didn’t win for the first 7 games did we? We were just ****. Aside from Rav & Dieng we’re weaker all over the park and we’re still relying on Howson. That’s what I based my opinion on. And of course I’m not happy, I think we’ve taken a step back this season.

Edit: I’ll concede Latte Lath is having a decent first season too.

I agree with you but I still feel some of the players we got in before the start of the season need as much game time as possible this season, Silvera and Gilbert being two that would benefit us next season by getting more game time in the remainder of this season.i do agree with you it's not realistically going to happen that we make the play offs even though mathematically it is still possible, I suppose MC can't been seen publicly giving up on the season yet.

Silvera should be absolutely nowhere near a side that has ambitions of promotion. Nor should Engel, I think he’s decent enough but it depends what our aspirations are.

Agree though, you’re right the club can’t be seen to be giving up. Even if it’s purely just to sell tickets.

We didn't have those injuries no. But neither did we have a side that had played competitive football at all before, which is why it took time for them to bed in and find any kind of rhythm. Once they did we took off, which also has to be factored in with the start to the season.

But your assessment of 10th before the season started theorises therefore that we'd have gotten exactly the same results with a fully fit squad the past 4 months as we did with a threadbare pool of players and a rammed treatment room. Whereas you may not, I would wager that our results would have been better over that period on the other hand, that's just a difference of opinion.

I could understand if you made that prediction in the middle of January or whatever, but at the start of the season I'd say it's a tad pessimistic and indicates either that you knew we'd have our worst long term injury crisis ever at the start of the season OR think having two thirds of our first team missing for lengthy periods wouldn't affect our abilities in the slightest.

The only alternative to this is that the players we've had available have actually over-achieved a great deal this season from what you thought at the outset and need to be given credit.

I really hope we give it a real shot, doesn't matter what other teams do, make sure our house is in order and keep winning, maybe someone will go on a bad run.
Yep. Although it's highly unlikely, to do anything other than try and field our strongest possible team and win every game would be pretty unprofessional and not the mentality I'd want our coaching staff or players to have.

The season is over when it's mathematically over and not before.

If we win ALL of our remaining matches (and yes, it's a massive if) we'd have 76 points and I reckon we'd make the playoffs.

I think it was a pretty safe bet that we'd struggle to match last season's achievements, given the quality we lost over the summer.

Add to that a raft of young new players, a horrendous start and an awful run of injuries and I think Carrick had actually done a good job of steering is to where we are.

You can also throw into the mix the fact that the championship is stronger this season too.

I think judging any player on their first season in a new league/country can come back to bite you. Even a known quantity can turn it around if everything clicks.

I hate when everyone talks in absolutes about players...

Kane would never have got a kick above league one after his terrible loans. Akpom would never have had a kick after he struggled for multiple clubs.

I honestly think Engel/Bangura could become a really good 1-2 at left back. I still think Barlaser could consistently find the good performances like today. Think Silvera could get 10 goals a season from a position behind the front 3.

Might be wrong - and you always have to keep an open mind both ways.

I don’t think I've seen a team (other than us) play so badly at the riverside…
Im glad we avoided a banana skin but boy did we make an easy win look so difficult…
We played some good football and had good shape but in all reality we should’ve won that much more convincingly…
Clark and Azaz were my stand outs, no one had a stinker but greenwood needs to up his game if he wants to encourage us to spaff £1.5 mil on him.. I’m not sure id spaff £1.50 on him just now…

I'd say this is pretty accurate.

Before the season started, I thought we wouldn't have a campaign quite as good as last season overall due to so many wholesale replacements taking time to bed in and not having anyone like Akpom or with quite the delivery of Giles. Finishing 6th seemed like a decent shout with a little luck.

So to say that at the moment we're 6 points worse off with the scale of the wounded that we've had still isn't that bad a return from my prediction, given the extreme mitigating factors, though I'd certainly say that why we've had such horrendous injuries this season definitely needs looking into.

However, against Scrug's prediction of the fully fit team's abilities though, the rag-tag mob of normally bit parters, supplementing handful of regular starters for the past 4 months, have performed out of their boots to a man and as such would deserve a standing ovation.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Howson on this thread. Okay, he wasn't up against much but he absolutely cruised through the game and looked like he could play centre half for another couple of seasons at least, no problem.

Thomas had by far his best game for us, which isn't saying much, but he looked like a competition winner in his earlier appearances, and Barlaser was excelllent as he can be when he's given time and space.
