David Hodgson - Under the Cosh

I was with him as a kid at an open day at AP he was giving out autographs I remember a bloke asking him "David is it true you been sold to Liverpool?"

He replied " Don't believe everything you read in the papers" he signed for them the next day hated him for that and as a kid i got my first taste of player loyalty to the club.

Have these lads on under the cosh got some affiliation with the boro or something?

A lot of there guests have some relation to boro or at least north east-related.

is it primarily a northern-based podcast or something?
I think it's more the case that they tend to interview more journeyman like ex-pros and that's Boro's most common type of player!

What an absolute legend - hilarious. Wonder if he does after dinner speaking - probably not, he's too modest, but could listen to him all night.

I remember him getting collared trying to climb over the fence at the end of the West Brom cup game. With his wedge haircut he looked like every other Joey on the Holgate.

Enjoyed that.

He is absolutely right about George Reynolds being a wrong-un. I had a bizarre impromptu meeting with him once and had several dealings with him when he was having a new private office/penthouse built in Shildon at his factory.

Definitely a character, who could be pretty nasty.

My mam and dad when they retired volunteered at Teesside crown court and were on duty the day the old fiddler turned up at his trial dressed in prison attire - arrowed suit, the lot. Yes, pretty much the definition of a 'character'.

Haha he’s well before my time but I like listening to stories from old pros. Especially ex Boro

Not sure if you have listened already but Neil Cox and Craig Hignett's are both great listens as plenty of dirt on the Boro! Especially Rav and Juninho's Sunday lunch spat!

They do seem to enjoy the Boro lads on there. There has been Downing, Wheater and Arca too.

No we are just funny people who like a laugh ;) :ROFLMAO:

Spoke to Hodgy for a couple of hours in Redcar in the nightclub at the Coatham Hotel. It was a couple of weeks before he went to Liverpool. He said then the club was trying to sell him but he didn't want to leave Boro but they were trying to force him out. He says as much in that video.

He was also in Boro end for Villa away the day they beat us 3-0 and won the championship I think. April 1981.

He was very much the last to go of the quality young players of that late 70s / early 80s team that Amer dismantled!

Yeah listened to them all 👍

He's got a rough, cutting edge to him, which I really like. No bullschitt.
Loved him as a player and remember what Lemmy mentioned - the time he jumped in amongst the fans.
It was brilliant. I think we missed what was going on, on the pitch, just to cheer him.
Be great if players did that today - like sitting amongst the kids in the family stand or joining us like Leo did in the South Stand.
Crackin series that.
Loved the one with Stewy too(y)

The game with him in the Holgate was against WBA - 4th round FAC 1981 - I think Hodgy had his foot in plaster too.

The Holgate went all quiet for a while and asked Hodgy to sing a Boro song and he did. He was not from Teesside I think he was from Gateshead, but took to the Club.

Was always going to leave once relegation was confirmed, seem to remember he was on the Holgate for the WBA cup game as he was banned I think, always loved his attitude and was a very good player
I think it was common knowledge he was going to Liverpool whether we stayed up or not.
As you said, he stayed a season longer than the other 'jewels', Armstrong, Proctor & Johnston.
Not sure why that was.

After his last game of the season against Liverpool he was carried off the pitch on fans shoulders (Boro fans, not Liverpool :))
