Anyone think houchen will get back in?

In Birmingham the independent candidate has hoovered up votes because of Gaza so Andy street is going to win because of Gaza stance by labour. Not much else labour could’ve done because they needed to appease both Jewish voters and Muslim population 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
Exactly what happened in Oldham.

The only thing to blame in this is the local Labour party for fielding a Pi$$ poor candidate

Chris McEwen may be a nice bloke but he has the charisma of cold porridge. couple this with a Pi$$ poor campaign where the only high profile public appearance he made was him getting tortured by Houchen and it was was always going to be a bad day.

the whole Labour party is a fcuking joke and someone needs to take responsibility for it.

Massive own goal with this... The tories were on the ropes and ready for taking... and still Labour fcuked it up.

Bent was always favourite but can’t help feeling Labour really didn’t have a proper go at this. A dynamic personable media savvy Labour candidate could have gone really close and hopefully got more Labour voters out to vote. I have nothing against Chris McEwan but he is very dour and methodical person. Most people I spoke to had not seen or heard from him and didn’t know what he stood for. The campaign was just too low key. Even the intervention of Gibson couldn’t save him as nobody knew who he was. You were almost asking people to vote for him as an alternate to The Dark Lord rather than on the man himself. There are many thousands of voters where I live in IB and I cant remember seeing him on the estate once? Joe Dancey has been doing a great job getting himself out and about but he shouldn’t have been a surrogate for McEwan. I think when they review this result Labour need to learn a lot of lessons for the GE

It's going to be a result that both sides are going to try and portray as a win.

The Conservatives will say they held the mayorship despite challenging circumstances and polling.

Labour will say they've massively reduced a huge majority in an election largely based around Houchen's personal popularity and one where he had an inbuilt advantage.

Labour dropped the ball on Teesside, they had a great opportunity to make a statement that would have been seen on a national level and could even of sparked an early GE.
Politics at the moment like it or not, is based on optics and a bit of showmanship...

I have no doubt Chris McEwan is a lovely guy but Labour needed a candidate who was strong and vociferous to take on Ben Houchen. A real tiger to take him to task on his constant stream of lies, someone to be louder, more confrontational and not afraid to really push him. We got a plodder who looked tired before he even began.

Same in the PCC race, is there a Labour councillor less inspiring than Matt Storey, guys never done a days work and looks like he goes to the same gym as BH.

If Chris McEwan and Matt Storey are the best local Labour have to offer I am not sure the GE results will go the way we want them too....

I feel really disheartened by what's happened, don't know if you can tell :sneaky:

Labour still have to convince voters in left behind areas like Teesside they really mean what they say about regeneration. A lot of local jobs went in the 1997 - 2010 period. Labour have to show an economically balanced UK economy is a top priority.

Just no..... this is a disaster for the region..

As others have said - Labour really messed this up, needed to run a major candidate here & - as decent a bloke as he was - it was not good enough & now were stuck with a morally bankrupt & incompetent at best mayor..

Labour took the NE & in my memory Teesside for granted for decades & did little & certainly not enough for the area - esp when we had the PM from Sedgefield & 'Mandy' serving in many high level posts & they did squat for the region..
