If you think this is only about getting a drink then You’re missing the point. When did booze start to be sold at games? Could you take a carry in?
It’s a genuine question. Could you get a pint at Ayresome? I’ve seen some pictures of Hampden after a cup final and the terraces are just a sea of empties. If you think this is only about getting a drink then You’re missing the point.
The 100 club in the north stand I’d say but other than that no It was the Westminster for us pre match. It’s a genuine question. Could you get a pint at Ayresome? I’ve seen some pictures of Hampden after a cup final and the terraces are just a sea of empties.
I remember getting a pint at Maine Road mid/late 80's,maybe 84-85IIRC the first time I saw alcohol served at a UK ground was at Wembley at the Zenith Data final (1990?).
It felt quite novel....also remember buying a sausage roll with an expiry day of 2 years and horrible triangular frozen fish being served.
The thing is there had been a clampdown on hooliganism and a new law had recently been introduced (1986?) banning 'the transportation of ale to or from a sporting venue'.
I seem to remember fleets of minibuses getting their beers seized and poured down the drain in Wembley car park.
I was convinced this spilled beer was being pumped back up into the Wembley catering tanks!
It seemed mad to be banning the sale outside but selling it inside.
Was there a law banning it though? Or was it just that it was not thought worthwhile. In those days it would have been real glass glasses or cans, no concourses to speak of and the majority of fans stood on open terraces. Sounds like a non-starter to me.No beer on the Holgate or any where else in Ayresome except the 100s club. WBA were selling beer in the 'away' end when we beat them 4- 0 in J C's promotion year. I thought it was a novelty back then.
