Films That Have Changed Your Life

Seems a logical one following on from the 'books thread'
Trying to think about those that have had a huge impact on you rather than 'favourites'. Could be one and the same tho.

Deerhunter - when first released blew my mind and really got me thinking about the insanity of war. Watched many more following that of a similar genre
Cry Freedom, Schindler's List (and some others) - people putting themselves at huge personal risk to stop injustice has inspired me to do my bit too (not to their extent, I might add - so no film to follow)

All Quiet On The Western Front had a huge impact on me.

I agree with Deerhunter and 12 Angry Men too.

Withnail & I. Had a great impact on me back when I was in my late teens and it still does now when I watch it, though perhaps in different ways

Interestingly I mentioned To Kill A Mockingbird on the book thread. I would add it to this thread as well, the film was just as impactful as the book

Seconded 'The Deer Hunter'. Makes you realise that war is about regular guys with regular jobs, who love their beer and dancing... the little things, then are sent away to kill people and all the senselessness that derives from that.

Devastating film which I watch every time it airs.

The Deer Hunter.... whatever the politics, it's a great story about ordinary working class blokes...very moving.
Walker and Di Nero are outstanding
It is but its also about the relationships and how they intertwine. Nicky Angela's son’s dad and Mike and Nicky not only share Linda but they’re together intimately aswell.

But of all the films and images that have mde me sit up and realise that we just are not doing anywhere near enough it`s the series Our Planet, especially the episode about the Walrus

Watch from 42 mins in......heartbreaking (even though the actual footage has been hijacked by those who don`t believe it`s truth)

Not sure any films have changed my life. They have certainly help forge the way I look at the world or educate. There have been many. War films like Peter Jackson’s They Shall Not Grow Old” which was a real life account of the horrors and conditions of WW1 brought to vivid life certainly stunned me.

Bowling for Columbine by Michael Moore brought home the madness of gun ownership in the States.

Apparently Fatal Attraction did a lot for reducing marriage infidelity in the States for a few years.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Haven't read the book but a startling realisation about the control of rebelliousness
2001: A Space Odyssey. Opened my mind to the possibility of Classical music being ok
Citizen Kane: made me aware that Directors were the main men/women on films
Let It Be - OMG the Beatles are breaking up

I remember watching "Planet of the Apes" at the Odeon in Middlesbrough with my Dad. He used to take me every Sunday Afternoon when I was a little boy - At 6 or 7, I was blown away by what was happening on the big screen in front of me. Something has stayed with me for life from that.

I loved the upstairs in the Odeon - the foyer was like a bit of Hollywood in my Industrial Town. Real escapism, especially for a child.

I strongly recommend you read the book too Kuepper. That, To Kill a Mickingbird and The Shining are pretty much the only 3 stories whereby the book and film are as equally brilliant in either form. Some slight changes here and there between formats, but all 3 fantastic books and fantastic films. Ken Kesey (one flew over author) is an amazingly interesting character along with his group of friends, The Merry Pranksters, especially their 'trips' on the bus and their search for spiritual enlightenment

One absolutely crazy one for me effected my childhood. My grand parents lived in Blackpool so regularly went to visit over school holidays etc.

I watched Jaws when I must have been 6-7 (good parenting😂). I never set foot in the sea in the UK for years despite my family telling me that's sharks weren't in the UK seas. I swear I lost years of swimming on family holidays.

I'm over it now👍😂
