Inter Rail

Inspired by some on here - just back from 6 weeks
We clocked up
4800 miles
51 Trains
4 Ferries
9 countries (Sweden and Norway were a first)
24 cities (22 new to me, 21 of them new to my partner - Copenhagen def worth a 2nd visit for us)

What a blast.

Quickly worked out it’s pointless reading on the trains - the scenery is breathtaking (especially the Bernina Express)

Big shout out to Italian Trains - Fast (clocked 300kph) and 1st class food and drink was good.
Armed police on trains too.

Although we went 1st class throughout - it’s prob not worth it in general.

German network makes ours seem efficient.

Got a bit emotional on 2nd last night in (Oslo) realising it was all coming to an end.
We had a long chat and realised - ‘these are the best of times’ anyway …. And we will just keep on enjoying ourselves.

Get back to UK and experience those stupid ticket barriers for the 1st time in 6 weeks 😡

Me an my mate did it in 2001.

Absolutely loved it! From memory we got a coach to Holland and watched Boro play Den Haag in a friendly!

Think we then went to Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, San Marino, Belgium and France. Probably not quite in that order!?

Highlights included watching England beat Germany 5-1 in a Croatian town called Pula, which has a smaller version of the Colliseum and listening to the Last Post at the haunting town of Ypres in Belgium.

The Chemical Brothers Star Guitar video always makes me think of Inter Railing!

Out of interest, how much was your ticket? Was it a six week all inclusive ticket?

We bought 2 month ‘global’ 1st clas tickets (you can get a number of different options) during their Black Friday sale. Think it cost around £800 each.

It’s a brilliant way to travel if you get the chance - you do pay a bit extra to book ‘seat tickets’ selected journeys. It’s not a lot tho (apart from the likes of Eurostar)
We upgraded to ‘business’ in Eurostar.
Absolute rip off but a nice start to the break.

I use Interrail all the time (three trips so far this year) and now use first class all the time - I'm old enough for an oldie ticket and if you buy when one of the offers is on you can get it quite cheap. I find it particularly useful when traveling in Germany on local transport where everyone has a Deutschland Ticket so second class is often packed.

Did this in 2006 just after the UEFA Cup Final. Still one of my most favourite trips. Flew into Barcelona and travelled up to Pamplona to do the bull run from there we travelled (roughly) anti clockwise around Europe over a 6 week period until we arrived in Paris to fly home. It gave me lots of stories to tell from the bull run, to being held hostage by neo-nazis in Antwerp. Would highly recommend it to anyone that's thinking about it.

Yes, I'm a big fan of Germany and I'm off to Berlin next month, but I get the impression they've cruised on their reputation for efficiency.

Frankfurt airport is a bit of a shambles too.

Glad you've had a good time.

That’s what the young Germans were saying - it really was pretty poor.
We had a few short connection times which were were worried about.

Needn’t have bothered - most of them are late anyway

Yeah, we are oldies and it was some of your previous comments that spurred me on. I owe you a pint.

Must admit - bit disappointed with Norway’s service, particularly after Sweden.
Bit picky tho

Economy Premium is worth the upgrade on Eurostar; it includes food and wine and is nowhere near as expensive as Business.

I`d love to visit Vienna, and Rome in the future. Id probably do an escorted thing though.
Ahh holidays, just got the hotel and flight confirmation for mine this morning, soon be time :)

What route did you take? Desperate to do a trip like this at some stage. Just so difficult taking enough time off work to do it properly

Belgium, down through Germany, onto Austria, across to North East Italy then down to Naples, back up to Northern Italy for the trip over the Alps.
Into Switzerland, France, Northern Germany, Denmark, Sweden before finishing in Oslo.
