Jonathan Pie on levelling up

I am not defending the Tories, but this character needs to go to South Bank (on Teesside not London and not Media City in Manchester) and he will really find out why leveling up is needed. He is right that the Labour Party has lost touch with the people it should be helping most. Whose fault is this?

I've been of the opinion that Starmer has being given a rough time generally but I think this brought home just how important it is for the opposition to be shining a light on the current government and that's not been happening enough.

I also suggested a while back that Rebecca Long Bailey's 'scum' comments were too far for some of the tory lite that need to be won back, and whilst I still agree, I do think we need to start discussing some parts of this lot as the horrible, corrupt and sinister lot they are.

It was Angela Rayner who made the 'scum' comments.

I prefer to be more positive and state what we are going to do for the people who are in the bottom 33% of society. The people's whose income is below £300 per week who rely on the state to be help them in life, Create jobs in areas with unemployment above 5% and in more prosperous areas affordable housing etc.

i think both needs to happen. I wish we lived in a world where politicians only focussed on what they were going to do, but the sad reality is criticising your opponent wins elections.

the Tories win time and again because they scare people off Labour. In terms of actual policies alone Corbyn and labour would be in power now. Corbyn didnt go on the attack, he did exactly what you said and he lost. The Tories offered pretty much zero substance but beat him by going after him and scaring the electorate off him.

Only three of the 13 UK regions have unemployment greater than 5%; the North East, West Midlands and London.

ONS regional labour market

Why we need to level up is not the point he’s making. I have no doubt he knows and we know that Teesside and other parts of the North West and North East needs significant investment but the purpose of the “rant” is to expose the hypocrisy inherent in a bunch of elitist charlatans and imposters leading the charge to do so. Waffle and bullsh1t is all it is. I think he exposes that well don’t you?

B66 - I would narrow regions down than the very broad categories stated - London may have localised unemployment, but in general unemployment is not its chief problem its more low incomes relative to housing costs.

Festa5 - there has to be balance - yes.

AT - prefer if he exposed inequality and lack of opportunities. It feels like a rant and does not include much detail. The already committed will listen but those marginal voters will probably not. An example of more positive would ot be ask the Labour party to close tax avoidance schemes such as those used by the families of ex PMs and Multinationals like Apple operated within the EU with the consent of the ROI tax authorities. Did Tony Balir win in 1997 because he attacked John Mjaor and his cabinet or because he had a vision of a better Britain?

Re 2019 - In general Labour lost the 52% who voted to leave the EU - it was not a normal General Election, but more a re run of 2016, certainly in England and Wales.

2017 was a bit different and Labour did well by coming up with positive proposal such as abolishing student fees.

Thre was a constant stream of attacks on Corbyn on not dealing with anti-semitism and his past connection with unpopular (in the UK) radicalish overseas type causes. Many were not from the Tories directly, but more from so called outside parties (could have be hidden Tories and just groups who wanted out of the Labour leadership position). Of course after he left it all stopped.

It's that sort of passion and anger that actually might make people wake up and listen if it came from a more widely recognised source.
It's the sort of attack that would strip away the veneer of competency that people seem to apply to the Tories and once that is gone then you can start to question their tenure.
People like sausages, but if they saw the whole sausage making process they might not like what goes on behind the scenes.
