La Palma getting worse

Local reports here in the Canaries say it’s entering an ‘explosive phase’. Not sure what that means, the implications seem to be it’s worse. They’re saying 1,000 houses destroyed so far.
 
The explosive phase is when gas is trapped in magma and basically lifts the top off and the ash, gas and lava is catapulted into the atmosphere...like the big one in Iceland that affected air travel - this could do the same in that vicinity - depends on the scale of the explosion and how much is ejected into the atmosphere, or at least that is how I understand it.
