Great soundbite, but the execution is nearly impossible to do as you are relying on a foreign power for assistance, enforcement, justice and punishment... Something the French wont do.

We have chucked Billions at the French to use their own police force/border force to stop the smugglers and all they do is wave them off.

The Tories are going to try and turn this into a one agenda election just like they did with Brexit. Starmer needs to be careful or he will get suckered into it. that Guardian piece has pulled him in to commit to binning the Rwanda scheme but also saying he will allow 90,000 extra people to enter the asylum system.

You just know the Tories are going to spin this against him.

Facts stopped mattering some time ago, I’m afraid.

The 100000 will be trotted out by the eejits, the liars and the ignorant until it becomes ‘fact’ in conversations all around the country

The French have offered numerous times to open processing centres- even paying for them. The Tories have refused every time.
On the one occasion a "processing centre" was opened by the British it turned out to be a trestle table with two people behind it.
Let's face it. The Tories do not want to stop the boats. They want to use these poor people for propaganda purposes. They want these people to be blamed for all of the failed policies.
 
Allow anyone to apply for asylum at any British consulate.
Take their biometrics & DNA sample.
Process their claim.
If successful, welcome to the UK we'll fly you over & get you set up.
If denied, they are allowed to appeal & have access to legal support.
If denied a second time, claim over.

No need for multi-agency multi-country approaches to stop boats being manufactured in China reaching France or trying to extradite Mr Big from Iraq, just for him to be replaced by someone else.

No mealy-mouthed concern about poor women & children dying at sea but doing nothing to prevent it.

Just provide a safe route for people to apply for asylum, deal with their claims promptly and fairly, and get on with solving the myriad of real issues affecting the country.

I'm not sure the Taliban would simply allow people to leave the country.
Nice theory though. Some practical difficulties but might solve problem for a lot of nationalities

The thing is, if you are fleeing for your life, do you pick up passports that would incriminate you to your oppressors.
Lots of people don't want to be seen near a foreign consulate or embassy as they could be arrested by the regime they are trying to flee from. So they pay people smugglers to get them out of the country. A huge risk because if they are caught it could end up in execution. That is how desperate most of these people are.
