Last Time We Scored 80 plus goals in a season

I was surprised that we didn't score 80+ in Robson's second promotion season. I remembered us being pretty free-scoring but it turns out we won a lot of games 1-0. We had a decent defence: we never conceded more than one goal in a game we won. Nearly 1/3 of all the goals we conceded were in 3 losses: 3-0, 4-0 and 5-0.

I recently bought some tickets for The 25 year promotion party at The Riverside.

To refresh the memory, I decided to watch the 97/98 season highlights on YouTube. I totally forgot how many results we had - certainly at the start of the season which were pretty disappointing. Quite a lot of draws against some average sides.

I was only about 9 at the time but have very fond memories of that season.

Also forgot how many Beck actually scored for us. He never really got a look in once Branca, Armstrong and Ricard were signed (can’t remember if that was due to an injury though).

First 10 games were won 5, draw 3 lost 2 for 18 points. It was a decent start but I do remember the first game was a real slog with us winning through Ravanelli then we lost against Stoke. Realistically, it takes a good 10-12 games for a relegated team to get to grips with the league.

Arguably this is the only season with Robbo where he actually managed the team well and got a decent level of consistency out of it rather than just buying the best players available and letting them get on with it. Then, of course, he reverted to type and bought Gazza.
