Maddison and the peevish Southgate

I said on here he should be picked for the Euros but now the case is unanswerable - he has to go. As Lineker, Murphy and Jenas correctly stated on MoTD last night, there's no English player who offers what he offers. He carry carry the ball, see a pass, beat players, he scores often. For me he'd be in the team ahead of Sterling, with Mount or Rashford working the other side. That feint he did to evade the Everton player, when was the last time you saw an English player do that? Gazza, probably. You look at England's recent toothless displays and as Jenas said, it's a no brainer.
Last night MoTD basically ordered Southgate to pick him, and It will reflect badly on him if he continues to dig in, especially if England do badly. He'll get pelters, and rightly so.
Actually there is one (possibly English) player who has what Maddison has, and we'll be facing him om Tuesday night: Charlie Patino. He's only 18, but watch this kid's youtube reels. The balance, the passing. He could be world class, and there's a big struggle between England and Spain to get him...

I completely agree.

He is a creative player in the best form and the only people who won't want him on that plane would be Newcastle United, who could quite feasibly see bids in the tens of millions go past £100m for Maddison if he were to go and do well.

Sterling and Grealish can have good games, but simply haven't had the consistency of Maddison this season, who has managed it in a team that has been through some challenging weeks.

If Southgate wants goals then he's going to have to make Bellingham, Kane, Maddison and Wilson work.

I don't think Southgate has continued to "dig in" as regards Maddison. Maddison has often not been fit, just back from an injury, or not in good form when England squads have been picked. None of that can be aimed at him today, I'd expect him to be selected now but at whose expense? Grealish, Saka and Foden must be in the squad, and I'd have Sterling for his experience in big competitions.

I think Maddison will have blotted his copybook with the casino incident, so he's probably had to work harder to get back in to the thinking than he otherwise would have done.

Clearly deserves to be in the squad next week though.

Ruddy pundits trying to pick the England team. They tried during the Euros and were wrong then

We had the same calls at the last tournament but then for Grealish and Sancho. Sterling should be dropped etc but then he was our best player. Grealish and Sancho have done nothing since their moves.

I would take Maddison. I think he's great. Don't think it'll matter though because Southgate won't pick a formation that suits any of those players.

All those players are good and capable of individual moments of brilliance. Don't think any of them are massively ahead of each other in terms of ability. It's a good group.

Rashford is rubbish though. He shouldn't be in the squad.

I think Southgate picks players on their personality and lifestyle, in addition to their talent.

Hence he doesn't get much of a look in, nor does Grealish either.

Not saying I agree, just that it's a factor.

Were they wearing flat caps at the time?

Jokes aside, I worry that Southgate still isn't picking Maddison because of him visiting the casino but it's silly if that's the case.

Got to trust your players. While I couldn't care less that Maddison went to the casino that night, it seems to have impacted his chances.

If you're a manager I can appreciate you may choose to take someone you like over someone you don't/ has done something to impact that decision.

I would drop Grealish for him. I think in moving to city Grealish isn't having nearly the same game time now.

I think it’s def that

Foden was on the naughty step as well don’t forget, but his talent has forced his inclusion.
