Middlesbrough FC Legacy Numbers

almost certainly going to be a new signing on the first day of next season isn't it?

You'd think so, aye, unless we bring in some academy players from further down in the pecking order on Saturday.

But it could still end up being a Matthew Hoppe or James Lea Siliki sort of player too.

I’m assuming only competitive games count ?
What if three players make their debut in first game of next season in starting line up ? How are the numbers allocated ? By lowest squad number ?

It must be competitive games, our Charlie played U21s but is not on the list.

Regarding subs, I would guess it would go on who enters first - the first number the fourth official holds up.

I'm guessing alphabetically, as that's how they decided the first 11 players.

My main takeaway looking at that list is the amount of turnover of players from the 2009/10 season until now is ridiculous. Players brought in who made such a limited contribution. No wonder we have had such limited success since.

Our most successful period, 2003/04 to 2005/06, we brought in no more than 4 experienced players per season. We brought at least 20 'experienced' players in over 2009/10 and 2010/11.

It’s amazing to see that among some great and some decidedly average players there’s some total dross and instantly forgettable players that make up this history…
There’s some in recent years that I have no recollection of 🤔😱

I know. No. 863, Bruno Zuculini?!?! Apparently played 5 times for us, and in a little group of "my god, what were we thinking?" numbers - 862 Carlos De Pena, 864 Richie De Laet, 865 Kike Sola.

agreed. We have to have a strategy where we understand the exit point for every player we sign and ensure we don't have 10 leaving at once and needing replacing. We need to sign players, with skills that match the philosophy, and stick to the philosophy regardless of manager, to make sure we don't end up with a squad of players that don't fit the system and need moving on.

Even though we've brought in 10 contracted players this season, I still feel we are moving in the right direction. I'd like to think we reduce that to 5 or 6 this year. If we go up, I'd hope we don't do a Forest, instead signing 5 or 6 quality young players. If we ever sign more than that, it's a sign of previous failure to squad build properly.

Really struggled to all look in the same direction, like an u7’s team photo 😂
Theres a bit of a story with that. Photography was a fairly new invention at that time and there was a school of thought that it could do you harm looking straight at the camera. Our captain at the time Tom Bach, middle front row), would never look directly at the camera because of this.

I’m surprised Erimus who used to post on here wasn’t involved in this.

Must be because he’s voting for Houchen 😅

His method of counting players is different to the one the club have decided to use anyway.

He counts players multiple times if they've signed for us on separate occasions.

So Juninho would have 3 players numbers, Stewart Downing would have 2, etc.

Not a style I'm a fan of, tbh, but I get the logic.

can't be that many players that fall into that category? Pallister, Cooper, Proctor, Juninho, Ameobi (but didn't have his second debut), I guess technically Omerou loaned two seasons, Kalas same, Zenden a loan, then a permanent signing? Those last three show the issue with having multiple debuts, it gets messy.

Number 18 (Robert Eglington) is a distant relative of mine through my mother's side of the family. I have a (team) photograph of him when he played latterly for Thornaby.

When I did my piece for the fanzine last year of an XI of players since our first League game who had played alongside their predecessor and successor (apart from the first and the last, obvs) three of the last four played for Boro twice - McAndrew, Cooper and Downing and that goes back 50 years. Howson is the fourth who is still playing obvo.

Ramirez, Saville, Besic etc.

I wonder whether he's classing players like Howson as new signings when they sign a new contract after their previous one has expired?

It is a messy system for me, one player having one number is much cleaner and simpler.
