Nathaniel Mendez-Laing had his Cardiff City contract terminated at the end beginning of the season

Middlesbrough are now favourites to sign free agent Nathaniel Mendez-Laing.

The former Cardiff City winger had his contract terminated with the Bluebirds on the eve of the season.

City shocked their fan base with a bombshell statement to announce that Mendez-Laing had been sacked owing to an alleged serious breach of contract. The exact reason remains a mystery.

Sky now report that Boro are ahead of Derby County in the race to snap him up.

He opened up on his struggles of the past year in an Instagram post in December.

"Be proud of how you handled last year," he wrote.

"I don’t know about you but I fought so many silent battles, I had to humble myself, wipe my own tears and pat myself on the back, I’m sure most of you had to do the same, be proud of you!

"Saying that, in one of my toughest years, I gained my biggest blessing.

"Happy New Year, everyone."

The Rams remain in the hunt for his signature, but the Neil Warnock factor at the Riverside means that Boro are now in pole position, according to Sky Sports.

Reporter Ben Ransom tweeted: "Middlesbrough are leading the chase for Nathaniel Mendez-Laing. The winger is a free agent after having his contract at Cardiff terminated on the eve of the new season. Derby have also made contact, but player would prefer to reunite with former boss Neil Warnock."

Derby cant afford to pay their current "players" - if a player goes there he needs encouraging to arrange an over-draft facility beforehand (y) :D
You sure? We already paid up and we're getting 3 players in on loan. They are

Teden Mengi from Manchester United. Centre back.
George Edmondson from Rangers. Centre back.
Lee Gregory from Stoke City. Striker.

'Can't afford current players' comments showed that you haven't got a clue Roofie but hey ho you know the best as seeing that you know it all apparently.

Here we go again......
Bloomin' Derby County!
Last time we 'battled' for a signature Waghorn went for £5m (or was it £7m)?
I bet Waghorn and his agent got a juicy contract due to that 'auction'.
Little did we know that Mel was cheating his way out of FFP - Gibson obviously thought he had his 'ducks in a row' - no wonder he was so furious.
So pleased Wayne Rooney's Derby are now struggling.
You reap what you sow.

As a free agent he could have signed for anyone at any time presumably. So bit strange it's come down to the last day of the transfer window and there's supposedly 4 clubs in for him.

I get that teams get a bit desperate, but we've been crying out for a winger all season. And of course we've just signed Bolasie. Just seems a bit odd it's taken so long for teams to make a move. Waiting to see if details of his sacking became public maybe? Although with his contacts I'm sure Warnock knows and has done for a while.

Rumours on the Cardiff forum that he was given a suspension from football for a few months on the downlow for whatever he had done. Only rumours but would make sense in the fact it’s took this long for interest in him from clubs

I think surely the lad has learned his lesson now and will knows he’s got a short career so has to make the most of it. He is a really powerful direct player and to be honest would probably suit us more than Grosicki. If we can get him right and I’m sure we will as it’s his old gaffer Warnock in charge he could be a bargain in the Watmore mould

Love that sentence.

It's very rare for a player to be sacked and booted out in the space of a few days. Then even months later no official reason why.

I've not heard the pfa stepping in or anything so it must have been a sound sacking.

That said if it's for drugs or whatever I ain't fussed (no kids or sexual assault and I'm 'fine' 😂). He's free and from I've seen over the years decent.

We are proper wheeling and dealing. I remember the days of throwing 5-6-10 million around on transfer deadline day and not batting an eyelid.

Iove the whole bargain basement and 'gem' hunting. I bet Niels got his black book on the go👍
