Yet another (ex)-Cardiff man - well known to Neil and a free agent:
Nathaniel Mendez-Laing had his Cardiff City contract terminated on the eve of the Championship season and is still a free agent
Nathaniel Mendez-Laing had his Cardiff City contract terminated at the end beginning of the season
Middlesbrough are now favourites to sign free agent Nathaniel Mendez-Laing.
The former Cardiff City winger had his contract terminated with the Bluebirds on the eve of the season.
City shocked their fan base with a bombshell statement to announce that Mendez-Laing had been sacked owing to an alleged serious breach of contract. The exact reason remains a mystery.
Sky now report that Boro are ahead of Derby County in the race to snap him up.
He opened up on his struggles of the past year in an Instagram post in December.
"Be proud of how you handled last year," he wrote.
"I don’t know about you but I fought so many silent battles, I had to humble myself, wipe my own tears and pat myself on the back, I’m sure most of you had to do the same, be proud of you!
"Saying that, in one of my toughest years, I gained my biggest blessing.
"Happy New Year, everyone."
The Rams remain in the hunt for his signature, but the Neil Warnock factor at the Riverside means that Boro are now in pole position, according to Sky Sports.
Reporter Ben Ransom tweeted: "Middlesbrough are leading the chase for Nathaniel Mendez-Laing. The winger is a free agent after having his contract at Cardiff terminated on the eve of the new season. Derby have also made contact, but player would prefer to reunite with former boss Neil Warnock."
