Raleigh round the Boro

Screen shot in the Raleigh "Tool Shop" - where all the separate components were made at the machine for Raleigh bikes.
[Albert Finney - "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning].

Kids played out in the cobbled street in the 60`s and at the bottom was "The Raleigh" - How it looks today:

The whole site - which included its own connection to the Nottingham - Erewash Valley Line and a Station at Lenton, is now The University of Nottingham "Jubilee Campus".
Where 4000 workers once turned out up to 450,000 bikes per year [in the 1930s] - and converted the plant to produce munitions for the War Effort [began in 1936!] - Now, there is a winding road with grassed areas and oddly-designed architecture befitting the academic mind.
No remnants of the site, but plenty of generations of Nottingham engineers and assemblers, still tell long stories about their experiences working there.....if you let them.

Great film

Alan Sillitoe, who penned the story and the screenplay, lived across the road from the factory.

Jane Torville of Torville and Dean fame used to stand outside the gates often and wait for her father, who worked there, to emerge at the end of the day.

My uncle was a senior manager at Raleigh, he told us a story of a guy on the shop floor who was suspected of being a little light fingered, no evidence , but he seemed to have more money than most and his general “air“ was shifty.
One day he was stopped at the gate for a random “chat” and spot check by security and for some reason a security guy had to move the guys bike out of the way of passerbys. He notice it seemed heavy, unusually heavy.
A few others had a good look at it and eventually stumbled on the fact that the whole frame was full of mercury, he had been stealing a frame full virtually every day for years he admitted, selling it on to a local firm, they estimated He had stolen thousands of pounds worth( this in the early ‘70s) over the years as the purchase and consumption of mercury by Raleigh fell hugely in the following years because of him being caught.

The White Horse Pub, once opposite is now a kebab place- although the outer building remains untouched.
Next to it is Silitoe Court - a characterless brick box of flats.

Jack - Brenda`s husband - returns from a day trip to "Skeggy" with their young son.
Arthur Seaton is scoffing egg and bacon as the motorbike comes down the yard!

Arthur has got drunk after earlier being found by Jacks brother with Brenda at the Goose Fair.
Jacks brother is a regular in The Royal Leicesters who is home on leave.
Arthur is just about to get a pasting!
