Spending Cap from season - 2025-2026

Firstly, if they're actually going to do it and not just pay lip service to the idea of sustainability and equitability, then coupling up wages, transfer and agent fees is the way to do it, so I applaud them for that at least. At the minute with PSR it's just transfer fees, which is daft as it's long, gigantic contracts that sink clubs and wage bills are often higher than what clubs spend on transfers most years.

I don't think £500 million in a season is exactly a victory for the common man. If these rules were applied to this season, only Chelsea would be in breach and only slightly.

Here's the thing though: there's no transparency on players wages, not much on transfer fees and none on agents fees. Reported transfer fees are mainly guesswork or a club quietly slips out a number to a friendly journalist; with or without add-ons, no-one has any idea. Clubs submit their accounts for the previous year but there's no detail. All the numbers of players wages in the public domain are either guesses, received wisdom, taken from unreliable websites or taken from FM. Can anyone tell me exactly how much we paid for Matthew Hoppe and what Jonny Howson's wages are?

Why is this? Every contract and transfer has to be approved by the league. So the numbers exist, they're just for some reason not in the public domain (unlike other sports, like NBA / NFL where every player contract is publicly accessible down to the last dollar).

If the FFP gods are going to assess clubs on transfer fees, agent fees and wages, then all this stuff will need to be accurately reported, in the public domain and they will need to factor in all the shady grey market stuff like image rights, becoming a lifetime ambassador for Saudi, dad being on the payroll as a "scout" etc. Quite a big culture shock for football, and I'm not sure they've thought that through for when Kobbie '£10k a week' Mainoo turns up at pre-season training alongside Marcus '£350k a week' Rashford.

Limit it to about £50m a year, limit player remuneration to £50k per week, limit registered professional players to a level that stops them stockpiling senior and youth players and loaning them out.

Might work 👍🏼

Won’t happen 👎🏼
