Statins

My doc has recommended I go on these, for my high cholesterol. I know I can improve my diet too, but just wondered if anyone had any nasty side effects taking these? Thanks

Been taking these now for a year and not noticed any adverse side effects.
Together with a taking care of my diet has brought my levels right down, so can only see this as a good thing.

Leg pains, or aching restlessness in legs, according to my Dad in the past and sister now. Lessened by taking them on mornings.

I'm expecting to be prescribed these too shortly. Waiting for my appointment atm...

Yep i am about to join the statins club too. I went through the whole lifestyle analysis thing and they couldn't recommend any changes so statins it is.

What cholesterol levels are you at currently?

high chol on its own should not be enough to put anyone on statins. you need to have other factors combined with high chol to be at increased risk of heart disease. the best way to prevent heart disease is to keep the weight down and keep active with a healthy balanced diet. magnesium, potassium zinc calcium etc. take mineral supplements. loads of people are nutrient deficient and that can cause you more health issues than heart disease. if they took a non fasting blood test and tried to put you on statins based on that like they did to me. tell them no. i was way over weight and to inactive. 4 months later eating much healthier and more active. i've lost 30 odd pounds. chole levels have dropped without statins, but if they put you on statins, they would say great statins are working, keep on them to keep level down. when reality is your own life style change fixed it. worst thing anyone can do is not look after themselves and just rely on NHS treating symptoms with pills. its not fixing anything long term. just masking symptoms.

Been on them for 3yrs, I didn't even know I had high cholesterol, I had a reasonably healthy diet, and I go to the gym 4-5 times a week, and am not overweight. The specialist told me, even if I ate only lettuce for the rest of my life, I would still have high cholesterol.
They started me on atorvastatin firstly (cheapest tablet and most popularly used) I was fine with these for first few months, but then started getting itchy when taking them, im now on rosuvastatin and I have had no side effects from these.
Everyone should get their cholesterol checked when over 50, it's the biggest cause for heart attacks and strokes, i'm so glad it was spotted during routine blood tests.

In terms of side effects, when I was initially prescribed them, I had weird arm cramps and restless legs at night. I stopped taking them, thinking I didn’t want cramps in muscles as the heart is also a muscle. Saw the doctor and explained my thinking and he prescribed a different statin. He also explained the difference between muscles like the heart and those in arms which put my mind at ease. Not had any side affects with the new statins. Was also prescribed Atorvastatin and changed to Rosuvastatin.

A q for those taking statins , what was your overall cardiovascular risk % score, when you were first prescribed them?
Was at 8.0 but now down to 5's
Taking 20mg statin and a complete rethink on diet which I think is major factor.
Doctor told me some people are just prone to high levels no matter what, but pills will help in my case combined with better diet.

I'm generally active but make sure to get out every day even when it's bad weather. ( I have an imaginary dog that needs walking! )
Waking the dog to the match this afternoon (which is why I haven't got a real one :) )

Wow, I thought they only started thinking about statins when you hit the 10% mark!
