The Lad With The Radio
Eric Hughes is the Boro supporter who knows the score
Quite unlike any Boro supporter since or before
The Boro are and always will be Eric’s team
And he follows them with a passion supreme
Born in Middlesbrough 60 years ago
He is known as the lad with the radio
Middlesbrough FC is in his DNA
And he has followed their fortunes till the present day
Bravely overcoming the obstacle of physical infirmity
A fixture at home games he continues to be
Intrepidly trecking through hail, rain and snow
Always with his famous radio in tow
Constantly tuned into BBC Radio Tees
A devotee of its expert Boro match commentaries
On the days Boro play away from home
Around the town centre with his radio he does roam
What’s the score Eric, passers by cry
And Eric updates them with a smile or sigh
The site of Eric with radio close to his ear
And as if by magic Boro supporters appear
And now courtesy of BBC Radio Tees presenter Paul Gough
Former Boro stars are giving Eric’s 60th birthday an early kick off
All aware that as the football winds of change continue to blow
The one Boro constant is Eric Hughes the lad with the radio.
Jimmy Flynn
Written by Boro bard Jimmy Flynn in celebration of Eric's 60th birthday, earlier this year. Published in the last issue of the fanzine - but I missed a couple of lines off so wanted to publish it in complete form.
