Whens the last time we scored a header from a corner?

It'll come.
As Carrick said in his presser yesterday, we are not perfect and the lads are constantly trying to improve.

We're not a big side, which is fine because we don't play a style that requires it, but that doesn't mean we can't carry more of a threat at set pieces.

Need to be more creative and have more variation I'd say, probably more short corners, change the angle for delivery a bit. Try and work it to the edge of the box for a shot, try working it closer and drilling it low etc.

We have technical players who can execute those sort of tactics, so need to play to our strengths more.

Looking at the breakdown of the goals we’ve scored (in the carrick thread) it’s 9 goals from set plays. Which was around the middle of the league. Just because we don’t score with a direct header, doesn’t mean we aren’t scoring from set plays.

I feel like it surely can't be as far back as the 29th of October (Akpom's header against Preston), but that's the last one I can remember.

A bit of googling suggests that teams score on average from around 3% of corner kicks, across Europe's top 5 leagues. I think generally speaking people over estimate the goal return you should expect. Sure, you occasionally get a player who is unstoppable, but we don't have that in the squad. I'd suggest that the groans when we take a short one are unfounded, they' probably give us a better chance, even if some go wrong.

And that's not direct from a corner; that would includes the passage of play until the ball next goes out. Archer at Swansea counts under this definition.

The chance of a corner being headed directly in is more like 1%.

We're also better at it than we give ourselves credit for. Chuba at Preston slipped my mind; I was going to say Crooks at QPR this year. We of course scored more recently from a corner vs Blackpool, though of course Paddy poked Lenihan's header over the line on that occasion. Chuba also scored a header vs Sheff Utd, but I think that might have been from a free kick near the corner, rather than a corner itself.

Either way, on average you have to sit through a lot of unsuccessful deadball routines to see a goal.

We also scored from a corner vs Reading. Admittedly, it was Reading's corner, but I'm not complaining. ;)

I've been saying this for a while. We win a lot of corners but we rarely score from them. It's a big miss in our abilities for me. We need to sign a CB who is an attacking corner beast in the summer
We seem to have a developed a knack of various players, both sides of the pitch, right or left footed - all perfecting taking corners for the keeper to catch the ball around about the centre of goal on the six yard box unchallenged
In a way it's quite amusing how consistent they are

For the older crowd. Didn't Mick Baxter score two in quick succession? I am going to say home to Charlton but that's a very fuzzy flash back guess.

Why not swing it out to the penalty spot like we did in the old days?

Ah yes, obstruction and shirt pulling is allowed now.

I HATE SHORT CORNERS!!!!! NO SHORT CORNERS NOW OR EVER!!!!!!!!

I remember having this conversation with a neighbouring fan during a 4-0 win over Ipswich a few seasons back. He was adamant that they never worked and were a waste of time.
I did have to point out that both the goals we'd scored thus far that day had come from short corners.

On the whole, if you limit yourself to long corners, I think you become easier to defend against than if you mix them up a bit.

Short corners are definitely effective if you can work a better angle for delivery. They're better taken quickly though, i thik we have been guilty of taking them when the option isn't really on. Certainly a good option for us with our lack of height to be able to mix it up a bit

nobody effectively running across the front post!

It comes to something when all we've got to complain about is this.

Mind you, I wouldn't be against bringing in Pulis in as a sort of Venables figure if it all ever hits the buffers (and its a big if). ;)
