Lack of class and respect sadly lacking in this board

I think you are entitled to your opinion - the “I’m glad he’s dead” lines are just in poor taste.
probably, yes, but as a person in public office that undoubtedly contributed to mental health issues through communities being decimated, health issues and premature deaths through the poor running of the NHS, suicides through loss of homes, jobs and opportunities, then I think there are some people that maybe have a right to feel that way towards him and his legacy. It's not my personal view, but I can appreciate the strength of feeling about it.

Leave a legacy in life where people on the whole don’t have anything negative to say in the event of your demise.
Not a bad idea but there will always be people who disagree. Even Jesus Christ had his haters.

The passing of anyone I'm public life inevitably leads to a reflection of their life, both good and bad.

I haven't read the thread in question, but it's quite right that people are able to express their view of his life through their lens, don't have an issue with that.

People have to earn respect in life to be respected in death. It shouldn't be automatic. We can feel sympathy for their family but as public figures, when the final curtain call happens, then we all have the right to question what impact they had on society, and to balance the gushing praise with a harsh dose of reality.

I didn't personally make any comments on the queens death for a few days, and I haven't made comments about Lawson, despite the fact I have extremely negative views of both. But this isn't North Korea, people should have the right to question the rose tinted views of these figures without being called out as being disrespectful in their death, because some of these people lacked respect for others while alive.
It’s fine to knock people who maybe have had a hand in politics that may not have measured up to a particular point or agenda but to trash the death of a politician or figure head (just because) kind of oversteps the reason why we are civilized and perhaps have an education.

If you didn’t like that particular person then say what you have to say but keep sordid and vile stuff to yourself. Moreover if you have an axe to grind with a person you didn’t really know then perhaps it’s best you stay out of the conversation altogether.

To be fair, it nearly took me as well, if it hadn’t been for the ring at the doorbell at 4-1 to distract me, I think I might have drowned in my own tears 😭
1st goal I was angry
2nd goal more do
3rd goal disappointed
4th goal laughing manically

I've seen very little on here or twitter that falls into that category to be honest

so.. people should keep their opinions to themselves? how ironic!

trashing the death of a politician or figure head is off the cards now I’d it? according to you.

you mentioned having a civilised society and an education.. without a thought for how many politicians and figure heads have been quite rightly trashed to create a civilised society, maybe you didn’t learn about them during your education.

sordid and vile are not words I would use to describe folks that are still feeling the negative effects that man had on our families and on our communities.

try having a little respect yourself. the 80’s weren’t all filofaxes snd sunbeds for some.

Spot on. A culture comes from the top down not the bottom up, if the politicians are rampant neoliberals with a total disregard for any fellow citizens that are unlucky enough not to be born into wealth, then they created a society that lack civility. One day that lack of civility will be turned on those that created that society.

The test for me is would you voice such opinions in public, amongst your friends, in front of colleagues and so on, too many trolls lurking with their venom on these threads.
I think that's an unfair test. You wouldn't start a beef with (e.g.) Tory colleagues because you know you'd have to continue working with them every day. I didn't post on the Lawson thread, because until I opened this one, I didn't know he was dead. My immediate reaction would've probably been akin to those that apparently caused offence: to remember the misery his policies visited on towns like Middlesbrough and to correct the gushing hagiography no doubt pouring forth from right-wing organs. But I don't have to share a workplace with folk on here. There's nothing to stop me expressing what I feel, nor should there be.
I have sympathy with Coluka's dad's dictum of not saying anything about someone if you can't say something good, but again, that only really applies to the living - and arguably only those out of the public eye. I'm afraid that people like Lawson in their lifetimes made rods for their own backs - as others have anticipated re Farage. Johnson etc.
Perhaps what enraged me most about Lawson is his applying for French citizenship after vigorously promoting Brexit. I've economically diminished your country for you - but I'm certainly not going to live in it!

'Common decency' is in the same ball park as the tories saying 'Watch your tone' in parliament. It's just a way to try and prevent scrutiny of actions and to put some people above others.

It's not common decency they want, it's targetted decency to the priviledged, to those at the top. If decency flowed both ways I may be more inclined to reciprocate.

This is it in a nutshell.

As we saw with the Lineker episode, the tories believe in free speech, as long as it is right wing hate speech, nothing slightly liberal or 'woke'.

It's funny how these libertarian, brave free wheelers start crying because someone dares to call a wrong un a wrong un.
