BBC Tees have wound up Chuba Akpom

Remember Drury was the one who couldn't wait to jump on the anti-Karanka bandwagon when he thought there was no way back before Charlton, only to crawl back with his tail between his legs when we went on to win the next 6 games on the bounce.
Yes he certainly was speaking for himself on that one another example of his arrogance.

I suspect what he said maybe true about the chuba from someone inside the club but hes spoken loosely without thinking on air

To be fair the bit I listened too didnt say chuba and his agent where asking for too much unless i need to listen further, so chuba is right to say that the tweet is not true, "Drury states hes been told that there have been talks between the club and chub and that the numbers that have been mentioned are rather big but as yet no contract has been signed" this doesnt state chuba has turned it down or asked for X/Y, lets be realistic yhe money in football now look at saudi throwing money at players, chuba has just had the season of his career and I dare say it will never happen again, he needs a move now to the prem etc on a 4 year deal on prem money for his family and probably preferably in London, do we blame hime cause if things go sour and they really could, he will not get offered better than what he is probably on at Boro come next summer free transfer or not, when he hasnt performed anywhere near the levels of last season, to replicate last season in anyway would be superb but being realistic I dont see it.

Plus I personally think a lot of our transfer business is built around the sale of Akpom for a decent figure, 10/12m upfront with add ons to 15m or he walks away free next summer having delivered no where near the same level as last season and lets be honest while I know people will say Chuba should be sold for 30m etc, that is one good season in his entire career in nglish football so 10 - 15m for a player we paid €3m for is excellent businss for Boro.

Akpom wants a new deal, club purposely offers him a lower deal than they know he will accept. Club sells Akpom as was always the plan. Club blames Akpom as they say they made him a fair offer. Club makes out Akpom is the bad guy. Just one simple scenario of many.

Common sense, seems like it's hard to come by on this thread! 👏

Hasn't he also said Giles or wolves uturned on a deal after agreeing and then we missed out on other targets too.

Sounds like the club sending out messages to the fans.

No way drury is coming out with this stuff without the club prompting him.
What are the club gaining from saying this about Akpom though? Really don’t understand what they are gaining.

He is injured, he isn’t linked with any clubs and as far as fans are concerned we aren’t aware he’s been offered a new deal. So it was just a case of as you were until there was some news.

Now it’s just caused unrest, feels strange if the club have put this out cos it doesn’t help their case at all.

I think the club has always been very competitive in championship wages terms. I would imagine its decent offer with promotion clauses that would reward him further if he helped us go up. I think he is hoping for a move away, hanging on to see what other clubs are interested.

It's very hard to see us agreeing a deal that would suit Akpom unless there is an agreement he can leave after a year if we don't go up. Assuming he is on 25k now we aren't going to be able to go much higher unless a lot of it is performance related.

If the club was giving him information surely they'd tell him whether it was Giles or Wolves who u-turned.
Clubs u-turning on transfer deals happens all the time, players rarely.

Maybe he doesn’t want to commit himself to Boro beyond this season, that’s his prerogative and I can’t blame him. Might all be different if we go up and can offer more?

Was just about to post similar. There is a whiff of the ‘dark arts’ about this.
If the club were about to sell their star asset a few days before the season opener (for the second year in a row….) and wanted to soften the negative fan reaction, maybe they’d want to shift some of the blame onto said star player, by leaking a bit of crafty ‘we’ve tried but he’s being unreasonable’ gossip to a local journo.

Of course maybe that’s all b***ks and overthinking things and the reality is Chuba is quite happy and there is a new contract to be signed and he’ll stay with us (which is what I’m hoping for)
Or maybe Drury just thinks he knows more than he actually does and needs to not gossip?
Have to say though, I now feel a little less confident that we’ll see Chuba playing for us again, which saddens me.

I've just listened to the bit of the podcast and it doesn't sound like its come from the club. Drury says, "I am told that the numbers that are being requested are way, way beyond what Boro could or would pay".

Doesn't mention his agent.

This has been blown out of all proportion in the last hour or so, and I don't think the wording of the Boropolis tweet has helped.

I don’t think it sounds like that either
