Boro 89-90

My second? season. The optimism of bouncing straight back after the previous seasons relegation, promotion challenge.......ummmmm 😁😁

First Wembley appearance, Rioch sacked , survived by the skin of our teeth. We beat Newcastle, but would still have gone down if Bournemouth had beat Leeds. They announced 'Bournemouth Nil.....' and we all started celebrating in The Holgate
Also everyone remembers our 3 match FA Cup tie with Everton in 87/88, but we also had that this season - a certain Norman Whiteside scoring the only goal in the 2nd replay

The cups distracted us, especially the Zenith Data one. 13 cup ties.

Davenport was hopeless but we perisisted with him nearly all season.

I thought Brennan was a bit lazy.

A lot of injuries too - Cooper was injured too a lot. Hamilton never played, Comfort only early in the season. Pears must have been injured for some of the season too, because I remember Leeds scoring a fluke goal against Kevin Poole. Mogga missed ZD Final injured.

I do remember battering some sides that season and not getting much. Barnsley away totaally dominated but only got a draw. Same with Stoke at home murdered them and lost 1-0.

Coleman struggled to adapt to higher league that season. I didn't think Putney was good enough, no guile. Baird only came in Feb. Rioch seemed to lose it, looking to buy lots of wingers. I don't think he was good when things were going wrong for a second season. Jimmy Phillips was a good signing but made in March. Left back was a big problem until he came. We also trained in Durham City and I don't think was a good move, too far from Teesside.

My first ever boro game was against Wimbledon in the cup that season we drew 1-1 Slaven got our goal

I remember that as a really rough season. Only my 3rd following Boro.

I'd brought one of the kids football mags, Shoot,! or Goal!, Or some such, and their pundit said we'd definitely be going straight back up that season. He was wrong, but I was young and daft enough to believe everything I read.

We had a couple of home defeats early on to Swindon and Plymouth, anc I realised it wasn't going to be like that.

I think the low point was a new year's match at home to Stoke; they were bottom of the league by a mile and down to 10 me and still beat us 1-0.

Highlights has to be Wembley and the last day escape act Vs Newcastle

I dont think you can overestimate how important the win over Newcastle was to the entire future of our club, was an amazing day in a truly great stadium which was absolutely bouncing even if it was far from full.
In my top 3 of all time favourite Boro matches.

Remember that Leeds goal - Parky back pass hit a divot and bounced over Poole's hands. 😬😬. 2-1 defeat??

The Stoke game, yeah, New Year's Day game. Played pretty well but just couldn't score. Think they scored with pretty much their only chance. A certain Chris Kamara given a straight red for a nasty just below the knee challenge on Brennan.

Eeeeehhhhh.........happy days 😂😂

It was my Stokie mates first visit to Ayresome. Despite winning, had no intention of ever going back.
He still says it is the luckiest away win he has ever seen.
Mind he still can’t believe they got a point at their place last season!

I was absolutely devastated when rioch was sacked he had done so much for us.

Me too; the only Boro manager I'd ever known. I don't think I'd really appreciated the transient nature of the role at that age.

Other memories:

Pearsy's surprise return to the team and remarkable deul with Kevin Campbell

Parky's belter Vs Sunderland

Losing 3-2 at home to Port Vale. They were useful at the time with the likes of Robbie Earle and Darren Beckford in their team. But it was Deano's first match back at AP and I think he missed a pen, then scored one. Many Boro fans applauded him when he did
