Isaiah Jones

To shove a dollop of contention on to the plate:
I know a chap very well, who has been a season cardholder for decades and follows the club everywhere.
He's definitely to the "right" in his politics [I respect him for bewing honest], but he made an interesting comment last week:
Basically, he said, "I think some fans deliberately have a go at Jones because he's black".
I was a little surprised, because it's not the sort of assertion I expected.
He may well have a point?
And maybe the same could be said for Rogers?
My mate could be completely wrong, but given the pathetic racist boos which ring out every time opposing players take-the-knee and some of the racist comments made during games - from a few "fans" in the South Stand, racism against Jones and comments like those of the OP, could have some validity?
Never heard the same or similar said of Coburn?
This serves absolutely nobody and your friend would be completely in the wrong with his assertions.

Thought he defended really well against an excellent team last night.

Could have been unfortunate with VAR for the penalty shout, but I think there was very minimal contact and the ref got it right.

He's a good player for us.

He’s inconsistent if he wasn’t he would be playing in the premier league. Only 2 years ago he was ripping spurs and Man Utd new ar5eholes in the cup. He’s a confidence player though. When he’s full of it and at his best he’s one of the best wide players in the league when he’s not his head drops and he makes mistakes and fans having a pop constantly won’t be helping him at all. The defensive comment by the op is ridiculous, he/she clearly doesn’t go to or watch our games 🤦‍♂️. Even when he’s off it offensively he’s always tracking back and helping his fullback. It’s why he’s shattered after 60-70 mins every game.

I understand the various view points regarding Jones. He’s hugely frustrating at times. He’s up and down. Some games he looks like a world beater and other games he looks league one standard.

What I would say, that is that in the current squad, you definitely notice when he’s not on the pitch. He was suspended for the Ipswich game, and we had no outlet of threat on the break. There’s no doubt a lot of sides are wary of him and try to adjust their game plan to suit.

I think he works his b***ks off defensively. Always tracking back, and unsurprisingly picks up quite a lot of bookings due to the nature of his role as he has to get up and down all the time. Let’s be honest, some of the “silly” bookings are just cynical attempts to stop sides counter attacking on us. Adam Clayton made a career out for that - loads of people loved him.

I think Jones is a decent Championship player but he can be hit and miss - a lot of wingers are the same. If he produced regular quality and end product, the PL sides would undoubtedly be sniffing.

The same criticisms of Jones apply to loads of the current squad. It’s not their fault, that’s the club / squad we’ve got now. We’ve been spoilt over the years with some amazing players (and some dog chit ones too mind!). I still think some of our Fan base have PL expectations at times. That’s not trying to be critical, it’s just an observation and kind of understandable based on some of our history since the 90’s.

In summary, not perfect by any stretch but overall a solid Championship player who’s still got time on his side to improve. He’ll also be helped once we get numbers back, as we’ll be able to rotate more. He’s been an ever present nearly all season, which won’t have helped in recent weeks with the amount of games we’ve played.
Pretty much sums him up. The comment about 'noticing when he's not on the pitch' is especially pertinent. Frustrating as he is, things happen when he's around. He's an outlet we need.

Not sure it’s helpful to accuse those (or at least some) of not rating Jones as being racist. I have not seen anything on this board at all to suggest that and people should not be afraid to voice an opinion even if some don’t agree.

The likes of Fry and Barlaser get far more pelters for example.
"Helpful" is not the issue.
It's a question which is valid.
We don't have to rely on what's been seen on this board to make a question worth considering.

There are a few people worth omitting from Boro’s team before you start slagging off I Jones.

He continues to get a disproportionate amount of criticism. There is a guy near me who criticises him for the entire 90 minutes. He can do 10 good things unrecognised but 1 mistake and the criticism starts. He was the same with Tavernier so make of that what you will.

Wingers are inconsistent. He's pretty much played every game recently, always puts in 100% and is always a threat. He is often doubled up on which shows you what other teams think of him.

This was on Twitter the other day - not entirely sure I understand the metrics but he's in good company. And look who is top.

Knocking him for his defensive duties seems odd cause I can’t think of many wingers who consistently put more of a shift in getting back to help out his full back. I think his effort and work rate is outstanding. He’s inconsistent, sure, but a lot of players in his position are, but when he’s on it and confident he’s such a weapon for us.

Is he good enough to be in a team that is fighting for a play off place ? I'm not sure what he brings to the team, he cannot defend, he is weak in the final third. As usual yesterday he picked up a stupid yellow card how many yellow card. That must be about 8 yellows this season. What are Jones strength's ?
Yes, yes he is & not only good enough but has been for a few seasons now one of our most creative, forward thinking & attack minded players - when we've been too sideways & backward he's always been one of the few that is looking to do the right thing with the game & ball - move forward & score.

We appear to have 4 players on that list!

I don't think people are (generally) being deliberately racist with Jones but he often gets called lazy (quite clearly isn't) and 'lacking a footballing brain' (he doesn't suggest to me he does, in fact his tactical awareness seems pretty spot on) - and laziness and stupidity are slurs that have been aimed at black players for a long time.

It’s not valid at all it’s divisive rubbish as others have pointed out both barlasser and fry have received as much if not more.
As usual, your normal emotional knee-jerk reaction to a valid question from a concerned Boro fan.
I give your comments the time and credit they deserve.
