As I previously stated. we have not been self-sufficient for over 100 years! There are a number of historical articles on the first and second world war that show this to be true. Even with the "grow your own" campaigns in both wars we never got close to being self sufficient.
It was government policy to achieve self sustainability following second world war but was abandoned fully by 1981 (and if memory serves estimates were we could achieve around 80% of our needs) but would be a limited diet and the security of that because of flood, drought ect) could never be fully realised.
Anyone touting the possibility that we could feed our population in any meaningful way without imports is living on another planet.
If you don't like immigrants or brown people in general own it, don't hide behind crap arguments like this.
On the subject of infrastructure, yes ours has been left to rot especially up north, but that is not due to immigrants its down to underinvestment from government. In effect it was a political choice.
To further the case for immigration to the UK, without it our population is shrinking and not enough money going into the system for pensions and services. So without immigration it would be almost impossible to fund the infrastructure projects this country needs as the government will need to borrow just to make up the short fall in tax revenue that would come from being hard-line on immigration to the UK. That's not factoring in the loss of nurses. Drs, dentists, and other professionals from the around the world that our economy and society depend on to man our services.
I can see why people take issue with small boat crossings but again what has caused these to spike? Could it be the government closing almost all safe points of entry to the country? The data would suggest yes! And even if the boats all stopped it is less than 25% (much lower I think but don't have exact figures in front of me) of all asylum claims in the UK, most attempts at asylum are from people who have crossed on a train, lorry or car.
The facts are the UK has lots of room just no political will to improve the infrastructure to allow our society to grow in a meaningful way. They draw attention to it so you blame anyone but the people at fault for the countries failings. If you buy the propaganda its because your thick, uniformed/disinterested in the subject or racist.
