Of course but I don’t think we should see that as a good thing, personally. We could easily finish second in our group

Well I agree that knockout football is unpredictable, but it really is about time England won a knockout match against a top level opponent. It has literally not happened since 1966, unless you include Spain in Euro 96, who weren’t a very good team at the time and had two perfectly good goals rules out probably because it was at Wembley, and then we beat them on penalties.Oh I am sure there were other reasons, lack of belief may have been one of those reasons, but really. The manager had to take most of the blame of that were the case. In any event my comment about France was more to do with scuba ridiculous statement about anything less than the semis is failure.
England will likely play France or Germany or Portugal in the last 16. Any of those 3 could make the final. So to assert that we should reach at least the semis or its a failure is clearly failing to understand knockout football.
I do expect them to be decent, but they should be expecting the same of us. Overall I’d say we should expect to beat them, but yes we have a problem with knockout matches and Portugal have got the better of us far too many times in the past with inferior sides (on paper).I think Portugal have got some brilliant players, it's the 11 on the pitch that matter not the squad.I think they could be the team to beat
That's a very good point AT. I wasn't aware England's record against the top teams was soo bad. That said to be honest we have flopped competition after competition until the last World Cup.Well I agree that knockout football is unpredictable, but it really is about time England won a knockout match against a top level opponent. Wow... stay classyF*** off.

Though it did just win Chelsea the European Cup.
Meanwhile the superior squad of Man City played no holding midfielders and did not win the European Cup (or even score a goal).
Yeah its a good point, and you can definitely argue that a major international tournament is far more like the CL than the PL.Don't be so sensible and actually knowledgeable about the game. Some of the people saying how England should play have long long careers playing football manager and fifa.
No worries, it's easy to misconstrue things through text at times. No harm doneSorry, was just my clumsy attempt at humour. My original eff off wasn't meant in an aggressive way, just as a "give your head a shake man that's ridiculous "way.
Apologies though as I can see might not have seemed that way.
I stand by my opinion. We have no chance of winning this tournament or any other while Southgate is in charge. That was absolutely abysmal.
