Labour criticise government for number of migrants crossing channel

Saying Patel has not carried out promise to make it unviable, with many more risking their lives this year
Tories refusing tp publish it's own studies into reasons why immigrants cross the channel.........I wonder why

Have they a masterplan is the question most would ask , seems unsolvable, ^& the article offers nothing sadly

The number of people crossing the channel has increased ten fold since Brexit, with the double whammy being that almost none are now returned to France because we are no longer in the EU.

The figures were revealed at the HASC recently and it's a huge embarrassment for the government's Brexit policy.

I laughed last week when it showed the French police turn up an hour after a boat had been launched and one of them was having a cigarette on the beach. The government are paying the French millions to stop them from crossing and the French authorities are nonchalant about the whole affair.

Surely they must know who are supplying the boats. I struggled to buy an inflatable during the summer in France and outboard motors are soaring in price because of demand. I ended up paying nearly £300 more than I would have in this country.

Ha Ha. Why SHOULD the French stop them? What right do they have of stopping someone travelling to another country. It's like the French asking that Scottish people be stopped at the South coast and prevented from travelling to France.

It's clearly a complex problem and I guess I would like to see safe routes setup, but that might create an avalanche that we just couldn't cope with. Oh I don't know. I do know that it is unsurprising that Patel doesn't have any answers.

It really isn't like that at all. There aren't 10s of 000s of Scots looking to seek asylum in France and the rest of the continent

I often wonder if there was a true will to stop this whether it would be quite manageable. Whether at the source, via traffickers or when they board a boat.

Its quite a useful distraction a few people risking their lives. Not a big burden on the country in the grand scheme of things and a big vote winner/ dead cat when required.

I appreciate its complex, but if there is a big enough network involved im sure its fairly traceable.

It’s simple why they travel to the UK…….they can be delivering your pizza tomorrow and just disappear if they want to!
Add to that that peoples second language would invariably be English and there you have it.

I was tongue in cheek there Artie. But why should the UK tell France that they should stop people leaving their country. What business is it of France if a person wants to leave their country. Imagine if that was the other way round.

None what so ever and that is why I laughed when I saw the police had arrived 1 hr after they had departed the beach smoking a fag. We know who the people smugglers are and could stop the flow by lifting them - something cambsred alludes to.

I suppose that's where its all gone wrong isn't it: once upon a time we might have worked with France to address the issue, but now we're on our own and France can just sit back and say not my problem

Happy enough to tell Belarus about people wanting to leave their country thou.
