Labour criticise government for number of migrants crossing channel

Sad that with everything this utter shambles of a government has done overtye last 12 months that the only thing putting a dint in their share of the votes are these people trying to cross the channel.
All the corruption and sleeze are forgiven as long as we don't let any "brown people in"

Have they a masterplan is the question most would ask , seems unsolvable, ^& the article offers nothing sadly

I listened to on of the shadow ministers on Marr yesterday and indeed they do have a masterplan. It's so simple too but as it smacks in the face of Priti Patel's current policy the Tories will never be able to action it.

Quite simply you open the legal routes into the UK to claim asylum. Then there is no need for boat crossings. It is cheaper to do it legally.

The UK system is unfit for purpose - I think it's something like 5% of applications have been processed. Money and staff needs to be ploughed in to get through the applications. Meaningful negotiations with the French need to happen (and not just mud slinging as the Tories currently love to do to make themselves look better to their core vote) and finally we need some agreements with other countries to return unsuccessful applicants to.

It might take a few years but the sooner we realise this system isn't working and change it the better. Next they will tout building a wall in the Channel...

I laughed last week when it showed the French police turn up an hour after a boat had been launched and one of them was having a cigarette on the beach. The government are paying the French millions to stop them from crossing and the French authorities are nonchalant about the whole affair.

Surely they must know who are supplying the boats. I struggled to buy an inflatable during the summer in France and outboard motors are soaring in price because of demand. I ended up paying nearly £300 more than I would have in this country.
Why would they (France) even try and stop them (other than the risk of drowning of those passing through, which they seemingly don't care much about), just look the other way and let them pass on through. Then when they do get through/ over to the UK, they know we can't return them. Patel doesn't care about them drowning either, she would be out there on a gun boat, blowing up the migrants, and the French, if she was allowed, she's a cretin.

Where as before we didn't have to pay them (French) to look the other way, and could return them, now we have to pay them to look the other way, and can't return them, what a brilliant tactic (not). Paying them to take on more of a burden, which they can easily avoid is not going to happen, when they can take on the money and no burden.

It's laughable in a way, at how inept they (Tories) are at handling this, or thinking they could just shut up shop overnight, and close it down. Even worse are those that believed it (brexiters), and follow the Farage fan club, they live in an absolute dream world.

Then the other funny aspect is we're now crying out for legal immigration, as we don't have enough people to do the jobs that not many want to do. We also call our migrants expats, funnily enough.

If only all of this had been mentioned or foreseen in 2015-2021, oh wait, it was, just like all the other things.

If we want to stop it (which I don't think we need to, or can do without serious human rights issues), then we need to look at why we appear more attractive than the likes of France or elsewhere, but other places take on waaaaay more than we do already. We're just getting a small share, which is probably a small price to pay. Migrants are a net benefit anyway, only the blind don't see this, as their hate of all those from foreign lands, won't let them see it.

If things were the other way round and people wanted to migrate from uk to France, no way would the tories let French police/army over here to help and no way would they take back people who didn't want to be here. Yet they expect the French to ....
I doubt that they would allow overcrowded Dinghies with pregnant women and kids set sail either.

Yes. I firmly believe that the police would not allow overcrowded Dinghies with pregnant women and kids set sail.

BTW: Your link didn't work

Well, given how our police officers have behaved in recent history, especially towards women and ethnic minorities, I would beg to differ.

Of course, everybody has their own opinion - I would hope that we could deal with a similar situation better than the French.
We do "our" bit daily and rescue the ones that approach our shoreline. It's criminal that this was allowed to happen
