This day 1975 - Gerrrriiiinnnnn there our 1st major cup trophy since joining the football league

Some weird definitions of major trophies going on in this thread. League championship, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA cup and European Cup are major trophies. Anything else isn’t.
Depends on context. Back in our amateur days winning the FA Amateur Cup was massive.

Maybe but it is still way more important an achievement. It was a national competition in which many of the top clubs of the day entered. It truly was a proud day for Middlesbrough that win at Headingly Stadium. We can truly offer that fact out today and any football fans will nod in agreement. Tell them we won the Anglo Scottish Cup and it will be met with a bemused smile. Except from Burnley fans who don't count their Anglo Scottish Cup win as a major trophy.

As you say its all about opinions.
You can talk it down as much as you want, I see as a big part of our histoy

I purposly added in the title "since joining the league" in 1899 as i recall you stating something similar before when i posted our route to our cup final win in other posts regarding our ASC triumph

Im not really too fussed if Burnley do, or dont, all that mattets is i do & will continue to post about our achievements throughout our history, including this day in our history

As you say all about opinions, we should celebrate them all

Theres no denying that one bit

As big as it is to us could we talk about our fantastic FA Amateur cup triumphs alongside Man City, Liverpools & Chelseas cup triumphs, of course we can as cant, its all relative, as i say leys not knock our history but embrace it

To add to the debate what do people on this thread see as our major achievement? I tend to use making the final of a major European competition as it annoys The Makems and Skunks, especially if you argue that Fairs Cup wasn't a major European competition!

Great stuff Erimus74. Strangely I don't remember those badges.

On a side note I was on the train going to Luton and was washing my hands when I noticed my badge in the mirror. It was spelt wrong with the extra "O". Thing was I have had the badge probably 20 maybe 30 years and wear it a lot. Never noticed before and neither did any of the people I was with on those occassions.

Im not talking it down and neither am I having a go at your tremendous enthusiasm for our past history. You will know, if indeed you care, that I have written many times about our golden 1970s. You will recall the post lockdown threads in which I wrote extensively about travelling the length and breadth of the country following Jack's boys. It was my favourite time as a Boro fan.

I just cant get over enthused about that Les Strong OG victory. I didn't at the time and I cant pretend to do so now. I was still reeling from that defeat at St Andrews the preceding season and Bob Hatton. Thats not to say you don't which is brilliant but our opinions differ. Let me know please when your Boro Base evening takes place. I will be there in person to carry on this debate.

I do care what you post Cardiff, you've been going longer than i have & a very passionate Boro fan
I dont want to come across as I dont care what you have posted, as i do, my comnent, that i dont care, is regards what Burnley think about their ASC triumph

We're all different, as mad as it sounds, I actually look at our ASC triumph more fondly than our FAC final run, at Willie Maddrens reign more fondly than Bryan Robsons term as manager & thats no slur on Robbo himself, he brought us things i could only dream of, maybe its the rosetinted nostalgic glasses I've had forever

Look forward to meeting you in person on the day

I'm happy to talk about, embrace and fondly remember our Texaco Cup win.
But it isn't and never has been a major trophy. Even at the time it wasn't viewed as such.
In a similar vein, the ZDS final is an important part of our history as it was our first visit to Wembley, but it wasn't our first major (professional) cup final. That didn't happen until 1997.
And 2004 ended a 128 year wait, not a 29 year wait.

Thats fine, our 1975 Anglo Scottish Cup win will always be always a major one to me though

The 1990 ZDS our first major cup final thank you 👍

Recognised by the club too

So 2nd place in Div 3 is also a major honour then?

Also this from the club's website:

Always interesting seeing those photos and hearing the memories of a time long before I ever started going, when I read about this final one thing that's always puzzled me is how come the attendance for the final was only 15,000? With it being such an exact number I've always wondered if tickets were limited for some reason?

Memorabilia from our 1st major wembley final, for me anyway
I love the idea of the scarf showing our 1st badge, class

I had a different one of these on my wall as a kid (sadly no longer know where it is) and it had major honours Division 2 Champions 26-27, 28-29 and 73-74 along with Anglo Scottish Cup 75-76

So I'm with you Erimus - anytime we knock both Sunderland and Newcastle out of a cup is good enough for me (especially as they still celebrate the trade fairs invitation only cup)
