Riley McGree [Mail / Sun]

I dislike Celtic intensely, but they are not Mickey Mouse.
I didn't say they were mickey mouse, I said the league is poor. At which point I'd have to ask what is wrong with you that you are getting yourself all wound up about something I didn't say?

Can’t disagree with Mart. The SPL is a shocking league, more and more players are leaving that league now to play in the championship with the hope of eventually playing in the premier league. Look at Ryan Christie for example.

If you remove 2 teams it would be worse than our 4th division. In fact you wanted a challenge football wise you get more sense of achievement playing for any team other than Celtic or rangers .

I'm really not wound up Mart.
The SPL is not a football backwater as you describe it and Rangers and Celtic are both big clubs.
They play European football every season and often play many matches in Europe.
They can pay big salaries based on big turnovers despite really low media rights. My posts prove the point I was making re finances. You can't seem to acknowledge the turnover comparisons.
There are reasons - financial and football - why players - especially foreign ones - would go and play for one of them.

I didn't say that either club wasn't 'big' whatever big means.

I did say it was poor league and I 100% absolutely with every fibre of my body stand by that.

Playing for Celtic or Rangers is taking life's easy option, trophies for turning up. E.g. Kris Boyd won 6 trophies and was league top scorer 5 times, yet was League One standard at best. Chris Killen has a league winners medal but is League Two quality. Scott Brown 18 trophies.....EIGHTEEN......but wouldn't have got into anything but a bottom 8 Premier League Team. No young pro who values his ability should move from England up there, regardless if they play in europe

Not sure what the Celtic/Rangers love in is all about ? They only get into Europe as they have zero competition and get knocked out early doors....If McGree thinks it's a step up then more fool him.
I highlighted him in my Notebook back in October, it's not my fault if we don't sign him...
Thanks

Still no acknowledgement of turnover/budgets, which was the point in my initial posts.
Unless we are in the PL we cant compete for budget with the Old Firm clubs.
Celtic sold more merchandise than we turned over in total as a Club last year.

Just because a club has a bigger turnover doesn't automatically mean a player will sign for them...stop being so niave !

You've got your points, I've got my points, which you haven't acknowledged.

simplification, parachute payment sides can compete, and on an individual player basis, dependent on how highly we value and on the players ambitions we could

You are comparing their peaks with our troughs, and that's fine that's where we are, but it's a gross over estimation of their pull as a club in my opinion, it's a poor league, an embarrassment for any player with ambition to go to that league. You don't have to acknowledge that, that's up to you

An embarrassment? Behave.

Celtic's wage and salary bill was £51.7m in the year to June 2021. It is in their published accounts. It was £56.2m the season before.
Our turnover with Parachute Payments was £56m in the second season after relegation and £62m in the first season after the drop.

You can have your view about how competitive the Scottish league is, or whether the Old Firm play many competitive matches ( I disagree with you ), but on the finances you are just totally wrong.

I'll add my tuppence worth to this debate.

I think the arguments people are having over club turn overs are irrelevant. I'm confident we would have offered McGree a competitive wage. I'd be surprised if Celtic made him an offer that blew ours out of the water but if they did fair enough. And IF they did then McGree has simply chased the money. Do we want a player here who is simply here for the money.

In relation to the football side of things there is little doubt that playing in the championship particularly if you manage to get promotion looks far better on your CV and is far more competitive than playing in the SPL.

Its 37 years since someone other than Celtic or Rangers won the Scots league - the whole thing is mickey mouse!

Any footballer who goes there suffers from a serious lack of ambition and desire to test himself at the highest level.

Scottish football is a joke
