Xbox or PS5

Hoping for some of the boards gamers to point me in the right direction. Not owned a console for about 15 years but looking at getting one for my son (10years old) for xmas. I always played PS as a teenager and automatically was going for that option but after initially being shook by the price tag of a PS5, I am now wondering whether an Xbox is a better option?

Help me out.. Give me pros and cons. There also seems to be various models of each and priced very differently.

He will probably use it for fifa and fortnite initially but guessing over the next couple of years he will want to start playing COD or whatever other online first person shooters people play these days.

PlayStation has the better exclusives

Xbox looks after their customer better

I would also think about who his mates are and what they are likely to have

I’ve got as PS5 and I love it esp as it seems to upscale ps4 games as well as it’s fully backwards compatible.

Prob Due to covid it was limited in games that showed its potential but now we are seeing that potential start to show. Have you seen the new cod model warfare graphics. (Btw this on both ps and Xbox )

My advice would be neither. Within 5 years you will probably regret it due to the amount of arguments you have with him trying to get him off it.
I already have that with his Ipad and Switch. I've held off as long as I can

At least he loves playing football and I've got him into doing a bit of K1 so he's not glued to a screen full time.

The last game I seen was Call of Duty MW2 which was released in 2010 I think. So no :)

And even then, I hated it because it felt like a downgrade on World at War

I suppose the good thing is you know where they are and it can be considered a hobby. Its the bloody headset with microphone that I should not have got him 😭

Look at what games he is wanting to play. And consider things like Gamepass as for some people if they aren't too keen on having the latest releases instantly you might not have to buy too many games a year.

Most importantly try to find out what his friends have. At the end of the day - it's pointless getting a PS5 if all his mates are on Xbox etc. He'll just feel like he's missing out on playing with them.

I don't think he would be that bothered about latest releases at the moment apart from maybe the latest FIFA. He's pretty clueless about games. But obviously I'm thinking long term as well because I would imagine within the next couple of years he could want to start gaming a lot more.

What is gamepass?

BG probably 6 and 2 3s but I got a ps5 purely for the ps exclusives as Gaz pointed out. A lot of games such as cod and Fortnite etc I believe can be cross platform so I doubt it really matters.

Gamepass for xbox is a game changer for me. See what his mates have too. But as stated above most things are cross play. Also depends on who has stock of what

When is this out?

Is it still the case that you can only play against people online who have same console? If s, I'm probably just better sussing out what his mates have. I think they all have Playstations

You pay a monthly / yearly subscription and get access to a load of games. You can only play them while you have the subscription but theres a lot of games on it. And new games get added every month (as well as removed). Some games get added the day they are released - others later in the year so you don't usually have the latest FIFA for example day one.

You can also get PC games if you pick that particular type of subscription or stream games through the browser on PC's, tablets etc.

Sony do their own version on Playstation.
