Can you admit that Southgate is doing a great job yet?

That sentence in bold is about playing attacking football. Attacking gives us a chance to score. I.e. if we attack we might win. The pragmatic (which is a fancy way of saying overly negative) means we won't win but we might not lose.

This is daft. Loads of teams have won over the years with defensive styles of football where protecting the clean sheet is the starting point. That's what makes the sport interesting. There isn't one way to win and all other tactics are doomed.

You're right Senagal are a good side who could cause us problems. Until England beat them, then they're obviously a pub team who have magically appeared at the World Cup by chance.
Just remember, whatever happens there will be some way you can be negative about England. You can do it!

Na, Senegal aren't a pub team. If we beat them I will be impressed. But Iran and Wales are. Jesus, Wales' only goal was a penalty.

I hope I'm wrong but can see us getting done by Senegal 1-0 or something silly like that. lets just hope we have a better 1st half on Sunday than we did last night.

It'll probably end up 4-0 to England :ROFLMAO:

Well one of those pub teams drew recently with the Senegal Arms. Pretty good pub side..

Also what happens up to half time, is pretty irrelevant. Its like watching a middle distance runner win a race, and saying "well you were 10th after half way, that's rubbish".

I see a lot are worried about potential opponents France in the Quarters (rightly so to be honest as Mbappe on his own is enough to frighten the life out of a prime Italian defence let alone!)

However, do you think they are talking about us in the same light?

I reckon they'll be fearing us too.

We have some cracking tournament 'form' over the last few years and we have some excellent attacking players who can hurt anyone at any time.

I will obviously have France favourites to beat us, but I don't think it's as straight forward as some may suggest.

Yes they have but generally it is because their defence has been their strength or they haven't had the attacking players to do anything else. For England it is our weakness. Our strength is our attacking players. We should let them play. We are setting up in a way that means our weakness is tested way more than we would like.

We should beat Senegal comfortably 9 times out of 10. They are a mediocre team and are missing their best players (Mane and Gueye). It's knockout football though. The best team doesn't always win.

Deary me, there are some right whoppers chucking their bait around on here. The whole thread reminds me of that internet argument meme involving the pigeon and the chess set.

A better half than the total domination against Wales we saw last night ?

Me thinks that maybe some of you have a chip on your shoulder towards Gareth that might just not ever be there had he not been your club manager in the past.

Really is difficult to fully comprehend and evaluate Southgate’s leadership and management of England. He was quite vocal in the past about players having to be performing at club level to get in the England squad / team but binned that principle fairly quickly.perhaps he had to? How many fans would have started Sterling in the first two games? Not doing well at Chelsea but preferred over young hungry strikers. Was he picked on merit or loyalty?
How many would have Mount, Saka Trippier Sterling in our best available 11?
Who will he chose for the last 16 game? I have no idea which worries me particularly if he falls back into his habit of ‘tried a and trusted’. Let’s reserve judgement till the end

Fun Fact:-

I’ll give the 66 team 2 goals because they won the World Cup but after 10 minutes today’s team would (ironically) be 4-2 up due to the speed of the modern game, the fitness levels, the technology, even down to the silly little vests they all wear during training under their shirts tracking everything little thing.

Same applies to any England team 10 / 15 / 20 years ago…even just make a dream team from the lot and put them against the current crop and they wouldn’t stand a chance, majority of them would just give up at half time and be straight down the boozer.

Football has changed so much but we have one of the best leagues in the world with lots of the best players competing against each other week in week out. As previously stated, lots of these world class players now turn out for Senegal, Costa Rica, Japan etc and every single team has a modern day superstar where in the past these teams didn’t even compete.

The only argument I’d accept is that in previous years we have undoubtedly had far far (FAR) better defenders but right now I’m so glad we don’t as imagine how ultra defensive and doing anything he can to avoid defeat Gareth Pulis would be then.

I’ll stick to my original point that (RIGHT NOW, in the current climate and against all of the other current great teams) squad for squad we could beat anyone but with Gareth Southgate in charge sadly we won’t as he’d always set up us to far to cautiously from the start and if they took the lead we (he) would never be able to come back.

Again, as previous posts have stated, please please please come back and have my life after we lift the World Cup and I’ll eat the most beautiful humble pie I’ve ever tasted in my life but it just won’t happen as we’ll always loose 1-0 or draw 1-1 through caution against better opposition under Southgate rather than just beat them 2-1 with a tactical and England team masterclass. Rinse repeat for the next few years with the classic hope that kills you and before you know it Foden, Grealish, Bellingham etc are 28, Gareth has finally gone having won nothing and the current very young inconsistent German team are world beaters.

Anyway, peace out…UTB and fingers crossed regardless for us winning the World Cup 👍🏻
I'm struggling to find it, but I'm sure there's a fun fact in there somewhere.

Yep. It's hard to defend for 90 mins like that with very little possession. You could see Wales were out on their feet by the end. The first half laid the foundation for the second.

There seems to be a lot of people who I assume watch a lot of football but don't really grasp any of the nuances and see the game in black and white terms only.

win = good. Lose = bad.

England should beat every lesser nation easily (even though other top sides frequently struggle to do so).

We have lots of good attacking midfielders so we should just go all out attack every match (not sure what they think would happen to our now over exposed below average defence if we did that).

Frustrating to read at times. And I'd say this board is well above average for understanding the game (plenty on here who get it far more than do). Wider social media land is absolutely ridiculous for some of the ignorance on display.

So are you suggesting that Trippier and Saka have been picked on loyalty rather than merit? Because Trippier has definitely been the best right back in the Premier League this season and I'm not sure England have a right sided player in better form than top of the table Arsenal's right winger.

You are basically doing what you accuse Southgate of and wanting your own favourites in ahead of two players in cracking form.
