I went a Leverkusen game about 7-8 years ago. I found their fans were really friendly. We ended up in some fans owned bar and they were buying us drinks. They knew of boro off the back of our European run. One guy kept trying to talk me out of going to match as, in his words, "we're f££King sh1t"

I think the playing out from the back was frustrated by not having any options up the pitch. No coburn to play it long to, no lath or jones for a ball in behind. We did the best with the fit players available. I don't see we really had other options.
